Rivetnuts, also known as nut-serts or blind nuts, are one of the most popular fastener products used in different industries from aviation to mechanical and pneumatic. They are basically internally threaded and counter bored tubular rivets, which can be anchored from one side entirely.
Two types of this fastener product are available in the market. One type is designed to form a slight bulge on the panel's backside for tightening the screws in the threads. The other kind is drawn in for tightening the screws but instead forming a bulge it's drawn into the sleeve directly. A rivet nut is also popular as fixed mechanical fastener and is very much similar to a typical bolt.
These fasteners are usually used to fasten or join two pieces of metals safely for applications in aerospace technology, steel construction and other kinds of situations, which need strong and secure holds. These fixed mechanical fasteners can hold everything together from an airplane to the chassis of an automobile to the Eiffel Tower in France. Ships, trains and buildings even require these rivets.
This fixed mechanical fastening product was introduced by BF Goodrich in 1930s. At that time it was used on aircraft for mounting rubber boots that are used mainly for deicing. Anodized aluminum is mainly used in creating most of these fasteners.
Different types of rivetnuts like blind, speed and others are available in the market. Each type is used for different applications and situations. So, it's important to use the right kind of fastener for holding metals and plastics securely. The fastening product is a smooth shaft having a cylindrical shape with a factory head on one particular end. The very opposite end is known as shop head. It is 1.5 times the diameter of the shaft and can hold all things tightly and safely in place. The tools force is used like a hammer to push the head for inserting the rivet in a pre-drilled hole. It is then that the fastener product is applied and secured tightly. Although there are many other kinds of fasteners available in the market, it is only this type, which can fill any hole tightly. It is not easy to obtain such a tight fit with other kinds of fastener products.
Rivetnuts are available in various sizes and prices. Depending on your requirement, you may even find them to be a very affordable product. They are usually available in different box sizes. The costs vary depending on the material of the fastener product i.e. whether they are made from steel or aluminum. The costs also vary depending on the size of the fastener. For example, a 100 aluminum fixed mechanical fasteners may cost you about twenty dollars whereas steel may be more costly. Each nut's size determines the cost and the number that is available in every box. The tools that are used for removing and installing these fastener products also come in different price ranges.
