Most people never give much consideration to the type of fencing needed for their homes; this can result in an enclosure that is ineffective and awkward for the house’s design. What is overlooked is that installing the right fence can offer many benefits to an entire household. Following are some helpful points to consider when considering home fencing needs.
Planning is Paramount
It is important to carefully choose a fence based on its perceived usage as there are countless options available with varying costs and benefits. When choosing the proper enclosure for a home, the best course of action can be categorized into three parts: determining the purpose of the enclosure; choosing the right type of material; and considering cost factors that will apply.
Purpose
There are different reasons why a house needs a surrounding outer barrier, including building codes that require such a structure around pools or tennis courts. This structure can also provide security, deter theft, provide privacy, and block out unpleasant views. While it is a fact that some fences are only effective when used for certain applications, it is important that owners seek professional guidance and plan this decision carefully in order to maximize the functionality of the enclosure.
Types
There are at least five common types of fencing: wood; vinyl panel; composite; metal or aluminum; and wrought iron. Wood is the most commonly used material. It is also cost-effective and requires low maintenance, as all that needs to be done is routine painting. Vinyl materials are known for durability and resiliency; they come in a wide variety of styles and colors. Composite materials are a combination of plastic and wood; they are more costly than vinyl but more durable. Metal or aluminum structures are easy to customize and require low maintenance. While wrought iron can be an alternative structure to metal, it is more expensive and requires regular maintenance.
When deciding on the type of enclosure to use, the material that is selected should blend with the overall architectural design of the house. It should also fit well with the area surrounding of the residence as well as the building layout. For example, a traditional rail fence is not the right choice when there are unsightly views surrounding the building. In this case, a better selection may be board-on-board fencing, as its purpose is to block unpleasant views. It will also unify the landscape and architecture of the whole house.
Budget Concerns
Just like any other type of home improvement, the budget usually carries considerable weight in choosing the type of material to be used for the structure. Yet, a budget should not hinder the quality and purpose of the fence. Determining a budget before shopping will help in finding a good bargain. Thorough planning will be a reward in the long run, especially if the house is to be sold in the near future.
A fence is considered the finishing touch of the architecture of the residence as well as the framework for the property. It adds definition to the character of the home and its surroundings. Considering the helpful information provided above should help in choosing the right structure and material for the property. Blending this structure with the architectural style of the residence and topography of the property can turn it into one beautiful work of art!
