What is microdermabrasion?
The term microdermabrasion is undoubtedly a mouthful and perhaps even a little frightening, but it is probably the most popular and effective non-surgical methods for the treatment of solar damaged skin, wrinkles, fine lines, acne scarring, enlarged pores, brown spots as well as other skin problems.
The "Micro" component refers to the fine crystals employed in the procedure, the "Derma" part means the upper skin surface being treated, and "Abrasion" is the removing through friction of the outermost layer of dead skin cells.
What is the procedure?
The outermost layer of skin cells are continually regenerating themselves. The older dead cells are pushed to the surface area by new cells. In our 30's and 40's, this natural process slows down, so nature might benefit from some help.
The microdermabrasion process utilizes a handheld device which produces a controlled flow of fine aluminium oxide crystals at high-speed. The crystals are vacuumed away, taking the topmost stratum of expended tissues with them. The new cells underneath are revealed, providing a soft and smooth appearance. At the same time the underlying skin is stimulated, creating fuller, healthy skin layers. The production of collagen is activated, increasing flexibility.
After the treatment the skin may perhaps be somewhat sensitive and it's recommended that you make use of a sunscreen moisturiser.
What can microdermabrasion do for me personally?
As the 2nd most favored non-surgical cosmetic treatment after BOTOX injections, the treatment is good for those that have small wrinkles and facial lines. The appearance of skin damaged by overexposure to the sun can be improved. It can reduce age spots, and some acne scarring and reduce skin pore size.
Why is it so popular?
The are several explanations why this rejuvenating process is now so popular;
It doesn't hurt in the least
It works on the outermost skin surface, so is non-invasive
Results are generally immediate, although major changes take several treatments
You can return to your every day schedule (blank) soon after
Treatments only takes about forty five minutes - it is sometimes referred to as the "lunch hour facial"
There are long term benefits of multiple treatments
May be used on all skin types
After treatment, the skin is much better able to take up anti-ageing and acne treatments
Diamond microdermabrasion
This is an alternative to blasting the skin with crystals. The peeling of the skin is done using a tip coated in tiny diamonds. Different tips are used depending on the skin type. Variable suction is utilized to remove dead skin cells. The diamond tip must be thoroughly sterilised in between treatments. An advantage with this method is that there are no crystals to get stuck in the skin pores.
Clinic treatment or home system?
Expert microdermabrasion is more effective than home systems because there is considerably more control over the power of the abrasion. The operator should be a certified professional who can advise on the most effective treatment method with regard to your skin type. There are many home systems in the marketplace however they vary significantly in their performance, although of course the price is much lower. Search for reviews from people who have employed the system you are contemplating.
