Sleep is something that comes naturally to everyone that most people do not even think about it or its importance. For the most part, the question of why sleep is important is asked by those who are having a difficult time with their own sleep cycle or those who have sleep disorders. In order to understand this natural part of people's daily life, it is necessary to know exactly why sleep is of utmost importance to the human body.
Here are 5 very good reasons why sleep is important:
For Optimal Physical Growth
This is especially true in growing children between the ages of 0-12 years of age. Sleep allows the body to perform optimal functions as such as cell growth, which is necessary in order to achieve ideal height, higher intelligence quotient, and many other aspects of human development. Children should get anywhere from 10-14 hours of sleep everyday (infants do need to sleep longer), in order to cope with the demands of their growing mind and body.
Rest and Regeneration
Sleep allows the immune system to rectify any and all imbalances in the body. This is why people who are suffering from infections or any kind of sickness are advised to rest and get some sleep. The human body needs REM in order to perform cell regeneration and heal itself from the inside out. Without proper or adequate sleep, it would be impossible to effectively fend of infections brought about by contaminants, i.e. bacteria and/or viruses.
Reduction of Stress
The body has the capacity to cope with even the most stressful situations and sleep is one of the most vital components of its defense mechanism. The more stressed out you get, the more sleep your body will need in order to correct the imbalance and regain status quo.
Effective Prevention of Coronary Problems
The heart is by far the most active organ in the body and as such, it is subjected to very high levels of stress most of the time. Sleep, specifically REM sleep, allows for the effective reduction of coronary stress which can lead to a number of problems such as heart attack or other related illnesses.
Overall Wellness
Rest is very important it is can be achieved through proper sleep. The average human being needs about 6 to 9 hours of sleep every night in order to feel rested and relax the next morning. It is a well known fact that people who get enough sleep are more energetic and productive, as opposed to those who only get a few hours of snooze every night.
Maintaining a healthy body and keeping sickness at bay are basically why sleep is a necessary and non-optional part of your daily routine.
