Mobility scooters are now available in many different styles from many different manufacturers making it more difficult to decide which one is best suited for your needs. When it comes to deciding which mobility scooter is right for you consider such factors as number of wheels, size of scooter, mileage range, accessories and portability. Warranty is another large factor to consider and many manufacturers such as Pride Mobility, Drive Medical, Invacare and Shoprider offer incredible warranties on parts and the frame of the scooter itself.
The first thing you want to consider is where and how you’ll be using your mobility scooter. Will it be something you only use around your home or will it be for outdoor use. When buying a scooter for in home use it is strongly encouraged to buy a 3 wheel mobility scooter because of the excellent turning radius it offers. These scooters have many of the needed features such as forward and reverse capabilities as well as a horn and in many cases a lighting package. When you’re purchasing an electric scooter for outdoor use, a 4 wheel scooter is typically the suggested way to go. Although the turning radius is slightly larger than the three wheel it offers greater stability on uneven terrain. While traveling on curbs and through elements such as gravel and grass the four wheel scooter gives you the extra piece of mind knowing you’re at less of a risk of tipping the scooter.
When you’ve decided where you’ll primarily be using your scooter you’ll also need to consider portability. There are many travel mobility scooters that can easily be disassembled without tools to easily be placed in the trunk of your vehicle or cargo area of your SUV or van. These portable mobility scooters come in both 3 and 4 wheel options and have a variety of weight capacities and mileage ranges depending on how often you’ll be using your mobility scooter and how often you’ll have access to charge your scooter. Mileage can be a very important factor as you of course don’t want to be stuck somewhere unable to operate your mobility device. It is suggested to bring your charger with you if at all possible and can usually be stored in the basket or in a rear pocket of your handicap scooter.
Lastly you’ll want to consider what accessories you’ll need on your mobility scooter to ensure it is as helpful in your daily activities as possible. While most scooters typically come standard with adjustable speed, adjustable handle bars and a basket in the front you’ll also want to consider extra add on's. Some of the most popular accessories available for upgrade are lighting packages, larger baskets, cane and walker holders as well as oxygen tank holders. While getting to your destination with your mobility is very helpful you’ll more than likely need extra equipment or personal items such as your purse or a walker to help you while you’re at your destination enjoying yourself.
So consider all of these factors while shopping for the right mobility scooter for you. If you have any other specific questions simply ask a mobility expert and if qualified they should be able to help you pick the right scooter to help make your life more enjoyable.
