Changing the entire appearance of a home can be accomplished by changing a single aspect such as the flooring. Coordinating the carpeting or wood floors of a home can really make quite a difference. Making a small adjustment such as this can often make a house look awesome and almost new.

There are many factors to consider when selecting the right type of flooring. Since there are many different types from which to choose, it is vital to pick the ones best suited for each individual area since the material chosen will affect the ambiance of the room.

The following is a list of possible flooring material from which to select.

  • Porcelain or Ceramic Tiling - Porcelain tiles are the best material to utilize in moisture-prone areas and are ideal for installation in laundry rooms, bathrooms, kitchens, porches, and basements. Ceramic tiles are easy to clean and maintain a good appearance; they are durable, moisture resistant, and allergen resistant. There is also a wide selection of colors, shapes, and sizes from which to choose.

  • Concrete - Concrete is used for other than highway surfaces and in fact is quickly becoming the most popular durable surface material in new home construction. It is easy to clean, inexpensive, and very versatile and can be tailor-made into different textures to create a unique and interesting appearance.

  • Carpet - There are numerous carpet styles available for every room in the house. Some time ago, Berber carpet was an often-used carpet style due to its durability and low price. The current trend is toward shag carpets and deep pile as the covering of choice. Carpet is a good choice if warmth and softness is desired; however, it is not a good choice for moisture-prone areas such as bathrooms and kitchens because it easily absorbs water and harbors allergens. Carpet is made from four different types of fiber: polyester, nylon, olefin, and wool.

  • Natural Stone - Stone flooring is carved from boulders into different shapes and sizes. This type of flooring is a great choice because it provides a natural-looking appearance; however, not all stone is suitable for this purpose since some of the stones are indestructible, porous, and have soft spots that may affect their performance. Honed-finished stone flooring is perfect for a high traffic area due to its increased traction; glossy-stoned flooring is not really recommended for high traffic areas as it is very slippery when wet. There are several types of stone that are naturally durable and easy to clean: granite, soapstone, slate, and marble.

  • Laminated Flooring - This material is slightly less expensive in comparison to traditional hardwood. It mimics hardwood and can be easily installed over existing materials. Laminated floors are durable and easy to clean. Typically, it comes in two styles: tile and plank. It is a very good choice for basements but not well-suited for moisture-prone areas.

  • Hardwood Flooring – Highly engineered wood flooring material has gained great popularity because of the quality and value it can add to a home. It can be obtained in several forms: solid, engineered, and plank. Hardwood can be installed by nailing, gluing, and floating and comes in various types, patterns, and colors. Wood colors have a great impact on an area. Dark-colored wood can make a room appear smaller, while light-colored wood can make a room look more spacious.

There are many things to consider in the selection of flooring material. A variety of materials can be used, each one appropriate in a different area. Ceramic tiles are fantastic to install in kitchens and bathrooms, while hardwood is perfect for living and dining rooms while carpet can be used in closets and bedrooms. With all of these choices available, it can be both challenging and fun to select the right flooring materials to the areas comfortable and good-looking!
