It's that time of year where fall is beginning to bow out gracefully and make way for the colder temperatures and frigid beauty of winter. One of the best foods to help you stave off the cold is a warm, inviting bowl of soup. While some soups may be high in fat or have a pretty large caloric content, there are also many options for healthy soups that can be enjoyed by the whole family.
One of the healthiest soups out there is tomato soup. Tomatoes have a relatively high concentration of lycopene, an antioxidant that is only found in fruits and vegetables and is known to help fight cancer, diabetes and even aging. Tomatoes are also rich in many vitamins and minerals including potassium, vitamin A and vitamin C and unlike other fruits and vegetables, tomatoes actually get better for you when cooked. A piping hot bowl of tomato soup with a half of a grilled cheese sandwich is the perfect lunch after a hard day of playing in the snow.
What is the first remedy that comes to mind to help alleviate the symptoms of a cold? Why chicken soup of course! Most of us know by now that chicken soup can't really cure a cold, but it is still a wonderfully healthy soup. Chicken is very high in protein which is great for providing energy and helping your body burn calories. Just about any vegetable is a welcomed addition to chicken soup, but we recommend adding a few carrots for a boost of vitamin A, some celery for vitamin C and fiber and a little onion for the flavonoids which are a natural helper to the vitamin C that will be in the celery. Onions can even help out with lowering blood pressure.
