A wedding is much, much more than an exchange of vows. The ceremony is part of a little girl's dream come true; a fantasy that has come to life and is as real as the sunny day it happens on. This is such a special event that it is perfectly logical that many brides to not want something off the rack for their wedding dress. Custom wedding dresses, something made just for them and just for that big day, is what these ladies definitely have in mind.
The idea of having a dress made to personal specifications is not really a bad idea at all. A wedding dress can cost thousands of dollars, and to spend such sums of money for anything that is less than beautiful to look at doesn't really make much sense. Custom wedding dresses are made specific to the wishes and the sartorial tastes of the bride to be. There is a cost factor and it is definitely to the advantage of the lady. Wedding dresses already made are not always cheaper than custom wedding dresses. The purchase price of the former does not include alterations, which can cause the final expense to soar depending on the number to be made. A custom wedding dress has the specifications of the bride in hand. The chance of needing costly alterations is almost nil.
Another consideration is the material. By having a wedding gown custom made, the bride is able to decide what fabric is to be used. Being able to choose means that material that is less expensive, but just as stylish and chic as the higher priced fabric can be used. Other things that the bride wants, those little touches that define her and her fashion tastes, can be done and not have to be added on later (and consequently be billed as an alteration).
Some bridal attire companies encourage their customers to consider designing their own wedding gowns. These forward thinking businesses understand the problems caused by the current state of the economy and want to help. A customer is allowed to provide the measurements and features she wants for her wedding gown and a professional designer will work with that person. Working together as a team the bride and the designer create a bridal work of art that is unique to the bride, showing off both her style and alluring appeal.
That is probably the best reason for making custom wedding dresses. It is something exclusive to the bride, as much hers as the wedding day itself. That makes the wedding gown something to be treasured. A bride secretly hopes that she will only have to go through a wedding once in their life. The wedding dress is therefore the only one she will own. Having a wedding dress that was custom made for her alone causes it to be something as dear to that woman as the day itself and the vows that are shared.
