A leap seven million years back into the timeline would probably let us experience the very beginning of human civilization. Progressive evolution over the ages has not only polished the early beat like man into the civilized and modern male of the twenty first century, but also confined his existence to an extent that sheer portrayal of the extremes of human nature is presumed as madness in the contemporary world. Neil Jordan is a film-maker is known for his ability to depict a clear stream of thoughts in the most difficult and unlikeliest of human circumstances. Through his movies, this gifted filmmaker conveys truths about rarely-seen extremes of human nature. Time and again, he lets the world know that the human mind, if tortured and pained beyond a certain level is bound to crave for revenge, naturally.
Having watched his films like Mona Lisa, The Crying Game, and Interview with the Vampire online, I somehow ended up visualizing the human brain as a spring that reflects back with a force at least equal to the force, originally applied. Streaming facilities enabled me access another master piece from this thought-provoking filmmaker, The Butcher Boy. This is amongst those movies that are honest with violence and brutality in a realistic plot that will awaken you to societal truths that can turn out both, unacceptable and unbearable, if served bluntly. An opportunity to stream movies by this filmmaker including this one, lets us experience Jordan’s cold narration with realistic visuals that scream out the truth, loud and clear.
The Butcher Boy depicts a 12-year-old boy from a poverty ridden family comprising an always drunk father, and a mother depressed by her child’ antics, reacting naturally to the cruel world around that eyes him as one the trouble-makers in the neighborhood. He comes from a family, where let alone the manners, people hardly have time to watch over the kids. His mother suffers a breakdown at the news of her son causing more trouble to the town. He makes his way out of that hell to spend days of quality time sitting by the lake and fishing with a bow and arrows in the Red-Indian attire. Throughout the movie, there are two activities that are constant for a major part of the plot. The first is the child is beaten black and clue by his parents on a regular basis that we see had a strange kind of phobia in the child. Secondly, Mrs. Nugent, his cruel, spoilt and mean neighbor continues to torment him and insult his family till a considerable stage in the film that can be accessed easily with options of online streaming movies flooding the World Wide Web already.
Years of torture, neglect and abuse makes a butcher out of that sharp-witted and intelligent kid, who appears defiantly honest with his feelings of hatred for Mrs. Nugent. The film portrays extreme human emotions in the form of a cold-blooded revenge from a child, whose innocence had been battered by pangs of this society.
