Suction-Assisted Lipectomy or Liposuction, has been the traditional method of aesthetic fat removal for many years. In this approach, a small cannula (thin metal tube) that is attached to a vacuum device, is inserted through a small incision in the skin. During a liposuction procedure, the surgeon pushes and pulls the suction cannula carefully through the fat layer, breaking up the fat cells and drawing them out of the body by suction. Traditional liposuction is effective, but requires extended recovery time. For areas with large fat deposits, traditional liposuction can be a very physically draining and lengthy procedure, often requiring the use of general anesthesia. This technique may be beneficial in those whom have a substantial amount of fat that he or she would like to have removed.

Two of the latest techniques in fat removal are SmartLipo laser and VASER ultrasonic energy. The SmartLipo is an FDA approved laser which is inserted through a small incision in the skin. The laser beam from the SmartLipo effectively melts the fatty layer it comes in contact with. During a procedure, the SmartLipo laser causes the small blood vessels to coagulate on contact, which results in minimal bleeding, swelling and bruising. In addition to liquefying the fat, the SmartLipo laser also aids in collagen production. This production of collagen will aid in tightening surrounding skin when their body is going through the healing and remodeling phase.

The VASER Liposuction is an FDA approved device that uses the power of ultrasonic energy (sound waves) to emulsify fat. This method allows for easier removal than traditional methods. The VASER is able to target the unwanted fat and leave the surrounding tissue largely unaffected by preserving the fibrous connective tissue between the skin and underlying muscle fascia, thus more rapid healing for the patient. This modern technology, allows the physician to give the patient custom contouring that he or she is seeking, all with less downtime than traditional liposuction.

As with any medical procedure, be sure your provider is well trained.

With any fat removal procedure, it is imperative to make sure that your physician has experience with the technique, and can show you work that they have performed. Sculpting bodies is akin to sculpting art, and it’s always better to have a master by your side. Using VASER or SmartLipo grants the patient the distinct advantages of less downtime, minimal and easily concealed scarring, an ability to have the procedure without going under general anesthesia, more precise contouring of the desired body shape, less bruising, and the ability to assist your body in the production of collagen. The newer techniques allow the physician to sculpt with more precision on delicate areas such as the chin, neck, knees, and ankles that would otherwise be more challenging with traditional liposuction.
