Among the many disorders that plague the human mind and body, none is so overlooked as eating disorders. Its sub-categories like compulsive overeating disorder, bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa all have the potential to destroy lives. If left untreated, the disorder can lead to death. Young girls and women are especially prone to suffering from it, a lot of which has to do with poor body image and lack of self esteem.
A strong support system comprising family, friends and therapy can do a lot to cure compulsive eating disorder. This particular sub-group sees sufferers eating beyond necessity with no control over their compulsions. The trigger could be anything and can be unique to each victim.
Curing it requires modifying eating habits, identifying triggers, getting to the cause of the problem and finding a replacement for the urge to eat. Sufferers should keep a log book of their eating habits documenting every day of the week. The log should then be reviewed with the reasons underlying why they overate. Therapy and treatment will help them find a replacement for their compulsion.
Treatment for bulimia nervosa will involve a change in dietary habits so that the food consumed is balanced. If the need to binge is overwhelming, sufferers should substitute their comfort food with healthy items like fruits and vegetables. Physical activity also plays a big role in the treatment for bulimia nervosa. Here, victims are engaged in activities that require them to focus on things other than their urge to eat. With time, determination and patience, sufferers will find it increasingly easy to switch their focus.
Another way to make sure that you beat your disorder is to avoid buying and keeping problem foods in the house. Inaccessibility means that you have no source to run to. Don’t obsess about weight and appearance and when you feel yourself beginning to do so, find something to focus on.
While compulsive eating disorder and binge eating disorder are two different illnesses, their basic treatment remains the same. Of course, professional help could dictate that it varies but the steps individuals should take for themselves is the same. At the end of the day, both disorders require determination, the will to get better and a huge dose of hard work.
