A light-emitting diode or LED is gaining popularity among consumers quite rapidly due to a number of good reasons. It is one of the most environment friendly lighting solutions available today. It is considered to be the future of domestic lighting all over the world.

There are a number of reasons that LED lights are a better choice than traditional lights like incandescent bulbs or halogen lamps. LED lights have a much better power efficiency as well as longer life spans. In fact LEDs consume only 20% of power consumed by traditional bulbs and lamps. Moreover, they last almost 30 times longer than other lighting systems. While incandescent bulbs normally work for about 1000 hours, LED lamps are known to have a lifespan from 50,000 to 100,000 hours.

LEDs also create very little heat during operation. So, very little power is lost in the form of heat. In contrast, an incandescent bulb loses almost 98% of the power supplied to it as heat. Therefore, an LED is extremely efficient in using a low amount of power to illuminate a given area compared to other traditional lighting systems. Since these lamps do not produce much heat during operation, the hazard of fire due to overheating is almost non-existent.

LEDs are much more sturdy and robust that other bulbs and lamps. An incandescent bulb would break immediately if it was dropped. But an LED can withstand a high amount of force due to its strength and toughness.

LEDs can tolerate extreme temperatures too. They are quite resistant to temperature fluctuations and extremes in weather conditions. They can therefore be used outdoors and be exposed to the elements without suffering damage.

As opposed to fluorescent lamps, LEDs do not contain mercury which is a dangerous substance to the environment. They also do not produce infrared or ultraviolet rays which can have harmful side-effects. They are therefore very eco-friendly as well as safe to use for the consumer.

The only thing preventing people from switching over to LEDs is the initial cost of these lighting systems. It might cost almost $40 higher to replace a traditional light with an LED lamp. However, when the amount of costs saved in energy bills is considered, it would be clear that LEDs save a lot of money in the long run.

It is therefore time to switch to LED Lighting as the number of advantages far outweighs the disadvantage of higher initial costs.
