How do we define Coccdynia? Coccdynia is a condition in which the tailbone (the bone between your buttocks) is inflamed therefore it is a pain in or around the area of the coccyx, also called as the tailbone. Tenderness and pain are two of the most common symptoms of coccydynia. This pain can often become worse if a person sits for long periods of time, especially when the chair used is a hard chair.Symptoms usually improve with relief of pressure when standing or walking.
Other symptoms include:
Immediate and severe pain when moving from sitting to standing
-
Pain during bowel movements
-
Pain during sex
-
Deep ache in the region of the tailbone
Causes of Coccydynia
Injury is one of the most common causes of coccydynia but it can occur almost out of the blue so to speak. However there are many other causes of coccyx pain which may make it look like coccydynia. Other causes include pilonidal cysts, sciatica, and fracture.
Diagnoses of Coccydynia
Commonly coccydynia is diagnosed based on the symptoms as well as examination of the area's tenderness. Other conditions such as shingles often associated with rash can be excluded. It is important to note any particular injury, whether recent or in the remote past. A history of prolonged labor or childbirth injury should be noted. A thorough inspection/palpation of this area is needed to detect any abnormal masses or abscesses (infections). Testing such as MRI Scans and CAT Scans are used to exclude tissue and bone disorders. Also, A lateral X-ray of the coccyx is taken to help detect any significant coccygeal pathology, such as a fracture.
Treatment of Coccydynia
Coccydynia sufferers are strongly urged to use a padded seat especially when sitting for extended periods of time. To reduce inflammation, some were advised to take some anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and naproxen. If the pain / condition becomes troublesome, or persists then medical attention is required in order to determine the cause or reason for the pain.
Rest is recommended in order to avoid further injury to the area, in addition doctors will prescribe anti-inflammation drugs to relive the pain. Persistent coccdynia sufferers are treated with cortisone injections. This is a simple injection administered in the doctor's own office but has the potential to dramatically reduce pain as well as even cure a few symptoms. In rare cases where patients can't seem to get rid of their pain surgery can be used to remove the coccyx altogether.
