The day has finally come. After years as a faithful companion, your MacBook battery has finally gone kaput. The typical first sign that a battery needs replacement is the time it holds a charge becomes shorter and shorter. As long as you don’t own a MacBook or MacBook Pro computer with non user-removable batteries, installation can be done at home.
MacBook Battery Selection
Although you can purchase an OEM battery replacement for your MacBook, the Apple brand product is likely to be expensive. Save money by considering an aftermarket replacement. Aftermarket replacements often have the same functionality as OEM batteries and cost a fraction of the price.
Double check that the battery you’re selecting is compatible with your model. To determine which type of MacBook battery to purchase, you’ll need to know the model and year of your MacBook. The MacBook and MacBook Pro use different batteries and the batteries aren't interchangeable. Also, you must know the release year of your Macbook or MacBook Pro. As an example, a 15" MacBook Pro battery from 2010 will differ from the battery for the 2011 release. Review the part number of the old battery printed on the body to ensure the replacement battery will work in your portable computer.
Replacement Steps
After you have found the right MacBook Pro battery, you can perform the steps to make the replacement. Removing and installing the new MacBook battery will only take a few minutes. However, for safety reasons, you should give the portable computer time to cool down. Unplug all cords and turn off the power before removing and installing the new battery.
For the 13" MacBook battery, begin by locating the access door on the back of the computer. Find the release latch above the battery compartment door and move to the open position. While the latch is released, tug at the battery tab gently to force the battery out of the computer. Keep the door open while you slip the new battery into the compartment. The battery must fit underneath the brackets surrounding the compartment of the computer. Press the battery into place and then shut the access door. The access door and battery tab must be alignment in order to properly close. Switch the latch to the closed position.
For the 15" MacBook Pro battery, you’ll follow the same steps to open the access door. However, to replace the battery in this portable computer you must insert the beveled edge of the battery while simultaneously holding the battery tab found in the compartment. Press the top of the battery to check for correct fit. Line up the tabs with the access door and adjust the door until it fits flush with the back cover of the MacBook. Move the lever to the close position to finish installation of the MacBook Pro battery.
***Warning
It is essential to remember that users can’t replace the 13" MacBook Pro battery on their own. If you need servicing, take these devices to an authorized Apple repair station. Attempting to replace a MacBook battery that is inaccessible could void your warranty. Moreover, remember to follow your area’s guidelines on how to properly dispose of old MacBook batteries. Find local businesses that recycle old computer batteries and deposit them there.
