A suspect planning Pentagon attack in Massachusetts is denied bail.
A man from Worcester, Massachusetts has been indicted for possible terrorist plots after authorities found a plot to fly remote controlled air planes packed with explosives into the Pentagon. His plot to use RC planes to attack the Pentagon and US capitol building was uncovered by the FBI in late September.
The suspect in this case is a 26 year old U.S. citizen who graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in physics. Rezwan Derdaus caught FBI suspicion as early as last year when he was found selling modified cell phones that have been adapted to function as arming mechanisms for bombs to undercover FBI agents. He was on a mission to declare a personal Jihad against the United States of America and is has been known to be fond of radical Muslim rhetoric.
The improvised explosive devices were sold with Rezwan Derdaus’ intent to ensure that they harm or kill U.S. troops overseas. In one instance the informants he was meeting with told Derdaus that one of his devices killed three US military personnel much to his delight (although the devices were never used to harm United States military troops).
Much planning was put forth into these plots including a visit to Washington for surveillance to photograph the buildings Rezwan intended to target in his attacks. After assuming a false identity, Rezwan attempted to acquire a remote control plane from a seller in Florida stating that it was a present for his son. He intended to pay for the devices using a Paypal account linked to his assumed identity.
Derdaus is strongly opposed to "kafirs" or non believes in the Muslim community and considers America to be an enemy of Allah. If convicted Derdaus could face up to 20 years in a federal prison for his plots to destroy national defense locations, US government buildings, and national landmarks.
Derdaus prosecutors attempted to get him released on bail to stay in the care of his father pending the trial however this decision was denied by the judge of the federal court. Seen as a danger to the community, a public safety risk, flight risk and a dedicated fanatic are the reasons why his bail was completely denied by the judge. His prosecutor is outraged and is arguing his case as Rezwan allegedly has mental health issues and is living within his own fantasy of the world he perceives. Despite this, the judge maintained his decision to deny bail for the suspect plotting against national security.
This story is just another example of how a judge’s discretion can determine factors in the bail bonds industry. Although every defendant has a right to a fair trial there are some factors that can be assessed to determine if they are eligible for release from detainment pending the out come of their trial. The bail bonds industry is a complex and sophisticated web connecting the public, government, law enforcement, judicial and financial industry in a delicately balanced procedure to ensure a defendant’s right for a fair trial. In some instances it is simply not possible for a suspect to receive bail depending on the nature of the crime they are on trial for.
