It’s a well known fact that the design of the spine makes it perfect for walking. And surprisingly enough we humans do very little walking these days. I see it every day when I go shopping, or go to the gym. People are constantly fighting to get that front spot, even on beautiful sunny days. Humans are built to move, to walk and to run. Long gone are the days filled with searching for food and shelter, to one so sedentary the health of our spines are suffering. Many of us spend a significant part of the day sitting, staring at computers, and it has been shown that this prolonged sitting has a detrimental effect on our spine and nervous system. The same holds true for those of us who engage in heavy repetitive lifting. The constant repetitive movement while at work eventually leads to spinal degeneration, and constant lower back pain.
It has been shown that adults who get regular exercise, such as walking, experience greatly increased health, much better than those with a more sedentary lifestyle. Those people who engage in light to moderate exercise had improved mood, reduced need to see a doctor, used less pain meds, and had less time on work disability. And the positive effects continue into old age.
The positive benefits of walking, rain or shine, are too numerous to ignore. So, throw on your walking shoes and get moving, you don’t need a gym membership! Walking lowers your risk of back problems, and is a good activity to rehabilitate a recent back injury.
