One of the major mistakes that diabetics make is to neglect the seriousness of the disease. Although medication can keep blood sugar level under check, the disease can cause a lot of internal harm such as nerve damage, blood vessel damage, and much more. The feet of diabetics are at a risk of infections because of a condition called diabetic neuropathy. This is the condition in which diabetic people lose sensation in their toes because of nerve damage and lack of proper blood flow. Feet are also vulnerable to infections, which could spread to the blood. In order to avoid such problems, it is very important to take good care of the feet. The use of diabetic socks is one way of doing it.
What are diabetic socks?
Diabetic socks are specially made socks for people suffering from diabetes. These socks are a combination of cotton, wool, nylon and elastic so that the feet are very comfortable and dry. The composition of fabrics in these socks gives them good absorption capability which prevents sweat logging and infections. In the past, it was believed that cotton or wool socks were good for diabetics. However, research has proved that cotton and wool should not be used by diabetics because they retain sweat, germs and odor, which is a deadly combination for high blood sugar patients. Similarly, nylon socks were also not recommended because they do not absorb sweat and the feet remains moist. In order to remedy all these lapses in different kinds of fibers, special socks with a combination of different fabrics have been designed. Considering the response, these socks for diabetics have proved effective in keeping feet comfortable.
Why are these socks a necessity?
Cotton and wool socks tend to be harsh on the skin, especially at the seams and the soles of the feet. They make the skin raw and bruised with regular use. Small injuries or cuts can aggravate the already fragile diabetic feet. People who suffer from neuropathy do not have much sensation in their feet because of damaged nerves that frequently occurs in diabetics. As a result, sometimes diabetics do not even notice or realize injuries has occurred on their feet. Wearing wrong socks can worsen this condition and cause very harmful repercussions.
The fabric used for making diabetic socks is usually hypoallergenic, which means that they do not cause allergies on the skin. The fabric is light and breathable. So, sweat build up does not happen. Artificial dyes and chemicals are for the most part not used in the manufacture of these socks. In order to enhance comfort, the toe area is wide. This gives the toes enough space to move around. Diabetic socks are of the right thickness, which helps to relieve pressure on the feet compared to regular socks. All these factors make them highly beneficial and important for diabetics. Diabetic socks are a combination of functionality, comfort and safety. Investing in a few pairs can be a major preventive measure against common diabetic foot problems.
