Renting a PA audio system for an event is a daunting process for many, setting up the gear even more so. It shouldn’t be. Follow these 6 steps and you’re well on your way to enjoying a PA system that works flawlessly.
- Make sure you are using the right equipment, fit for the purpose.
It pays to shop around so always approach more than one rental company. See if you feel comfortable with the service you’re getting whilst in the selection phase. Once you’ve made your decision, assess each component (microphone, speakers, mixer panel) individually to make sure that they are in working condition and don’t suffer from abnormal wear and tear. Check all wiring for defects or fraying. Have it replaced if necessary. If at all possible, have the rental company demonstrate the system to you. This enables you to assess the sound output and you’ll see how the system is set up, which wire goes where etc. Best of all, you will be able to spot broken parts or substandard components.
- Speaker placement: location, location, location!
It is vital that audio speakers are placed in the right spot. Feedback (the annoyingly loud squeaking noise) can be avoided by placing the speakers behind the microphone. Seating arrangements should be placed sufficiently clear from the speakers to avoid potential annoyance or hearing damage. Place speakers high up so the sound travels to the back of the room. Final tip: keep speakers away from corners of the room and away from walls.
- Set up the microphone on stage so it will be at roughly the correct height. Make sure it’s securely held.
Chances are that you’re setting up for a modest event and not a Kiss concert so set the microphone up as a static unit, adjusting it to a height that is suitable for all users. You want to avoid the person using the microphone from fumbling it around so tape the stand to the floor if necessary.
- Tie up the loose ends
Cables are a trip hazard. Avoid having them run across the stage or tape them to the floor with brightly coloured tape.
- Test the system with a friend speaking into the microphone.
Make sure you’re well prepared by having a friend speak into the microphone so you can adjust the volume and sound quality. The bottom line is that one the event has started there is no time left to make adjustments. Make sure you stick around for the duration of the gig as someone needs to be at hand to troubleshoot the PA system if needs be.
- Be sure that volume levels are adequate before the event starts.
If not, slight directional alterations can be made to make the sound waves travel further. Do all this well in advance because making adjustments during the show can be annoying and might kill the momentum.
Last but not least, the rental company should be available for technical consultation before and during the event. Check that they are willing and able. Have their phone number handy, just in case. Remember, these guys specify and set up PA audio systems on a daily basis so don’t be afraid to tap into that knowledge.
Following these golden rules will assure success. You really do not have to be a sound expert! Good luck!
