Have you ever wondered why there are so many kitchen cutlery sets with such a wide range of pricing when all you want to know is will the knives cut well and last a while? So have I. I did some research on the subject and found there are a variety of factors involved besides just performance and longevity.
To start with, there is an old saying that says "One man's trash is another man's treasure." When it comes to choosing a cutlery set to meet your individual needs, you may think that one of the most expensive cutlery sets out there is a waste of money and be more satisfied with something that is a fraction of the expensive set's cost. On the flip side, you might think that it has to cost well into
the hundreds, or possibly even the thousands, before you would even consider looking at it, much less using it. Thus, marketing has a lot to do with the wide price range and considers the specific customer market the manufacturer is trying to reach.
Obviously, marketing is not the main factor involved in determining the cost of any item. When it comes to kitchen cutlery Sets, there are several factors that truly are a base consideration in the official pricing. It can be the type of material the blades are made from, such as steel or ceramic. It can be the type of material the handles are made from, such as wood, plastic or steel. It can be the quality of the materials used in the blade, such as Damascus steel or German steel. It can be the quality of the materials used in the handle, such as Olive wood or hickory. It can be the process used to make the blade, such as forged or layered steel. It can be the process used to put the handle on, such as riveted, bracketed or all one piece. It can be the quality of the finished product, such as exemplary workmanship or seconds because of some possible flaw. It can be the style of the handle, such as ridging
in the plastic for a better grip, conveniently placed curves for a better fit in your hand, or even an adjustable weight system that allows personal preferences. It can be the job the specific knives are intended for, such as filleting or chopping. It can be the durability of the blade, such as not easily chipping or bending. It can be the staying power of the blade's sharpness. It can be the durability of
the handle. It can be the ease of the cleaning process. It can be the reputation of the company making kitchen cutlery sets. It can be the reputation of some well known person that has been asked to use or demonstrate the kitchen cutlery set for endorsement purposes. And yes, the prestige of the market the manufacturer is trying to target will be factored in.
Are you dizzy yet? We are almost there; but when looking at kitchen cutlery sets overall, there are a few other factors that greatly influence the cost of the individual kitchen cutlery sets, such as the number of knives in the set, the type of knives included, the expandability of the set, and whether or not a knife block is included. The inclusion of a knife block will bring in several of those factors mentioned above to apply to the block itself, such as material, quality, and style; and it then adds capacity as another factor to consider.
No matter what individual factors go into making, pricing and marketing, it is the personal preference of the user that will determine which kitchen cutlery set is best for you.
