Do you feel like you are paying too much for your electricity? Have you been wondering what you would need to do to switch electricity providers but been worried that the process might be both inconvenient and time-consuming? Rest assured, because the steps involved with changing to a different energy supplier are actually quite simple. Much of the work is done for you once you are able to find out which provider can offer you the best prices. By putting in a little time to research your best option now, you will soon be able to start saving money on your energy bills.
Starting Out
By trying to find out how to change electricity providers, you have already taken the crucial first step. The consumers in the U.K. who end up paying the most for energy are usually the ones who don’t care enough to do their research. Comparing the prices offered by various suppliers will be your first step, and the Internet is an invaluable tool to do so. There are a few pieces of information that you should gather before you start your search online. The first is an estimation of how much you currently spend on electricity each month. Take an average of your last several bills, and you will be able to come up with your usual energy cost. Remember to include both winter and summer months when coming up with your average so that you take into account the amount of power used to heat your home when it’s cold. The second piece of information that will come in handy when you start your search will be the exact name of your current electricity tariff. By knowing exactly what service you are switching away from, you will be able to get an accurate comparison with any new services you consider. Finally, you will likely need to enter your postcode when you are looking up supplier options online to ensure that you get information that is specific to your location.
Choosing a New Service
By accessing the Internet to search for other energy providers, you will be able to guarantee that you have the full range of possible new suppliers available at your fingertips. Look into your current company, and find out if the tariff you are signed up for now is actually their best deal or if you could be saving money without changing providers. You might be able to save by switching to a fixed tariff from of a variable one, or you may find offers tailored to you if you are disabled or of pension age. Next, you should look into the rates offered by other suppliers. You will be able to find and read reviews from customers of each different company, so take other people’s opinions into account as well as looking specifically at the money savings. Depending on your billing preferences, you can consider standard (variable) tariffs, fixed tariffs, and off-peak tariffs like Economy 7 and Economy 10. Be sure to consider all of your options, and don’t make a decision too hastily in case you find a better deal later.
Changing to the New Provider
You will find that you need to maintain a level of communication with both your existing provider as well as the company that you are switching to during the process of changing electricity suppliers. Your first interaction will be with the new company. They will walk you through all the steps associated with switching over your service. You won’t need to worry about your electricity ever being interrupted because nothing needs to be physically changed with your hookups when you switch to your new provider. Instead, all the work will mostly be done on the back end, and you will start your new service on a date that will be relayed to you by the new supplier. Expect to be in limbo for several weeks before the change is complete. During this time, you will still receive service from your old company with the understanding that you will be switching over soon. Make sure to pay down any old debts with your existing supplier so that you will be able to start clean with your new company. Once the day arrives to finally switch electricity providers, you will be able to enjoy paying less for your service right away.
