Most of the colleges teach English as a second language. It is by far the mostly used language internationally. Many people from all walks of life have been trying to learn it either for business purposes, academics or for easy communication with those speaking the same.
Narrowing down to the undergraduate program, there is the English major as well the minor. A good language student must make a proper choice as to the area they want to major or minor in. An ideal college of English language will have programs such as poetry writing; renaissance and medieval English; modern literature and culture; and the program for distinguished majors.
Poetry writing program:
A good college of English language will always have a poetry writing program. This imparts undergraduate students with the skills of poetic and poetry writing especially as relates to major subject. The program envisages the encouragement of members in the creation of an interdisciplinary curriculum aimed at inspiring and nurturing every student’s specific work. Many colleges offer poetry writing within a duration of two years. However, this varies from one institution to another and also depends on whether a student is taking it as a major or a minor.
The renaissance and medieval English:
This is mostly taken as a major subject. This program delves into the past cultural forms and the different perspectives that the same offer on the present day situations. Students in this case are encouraged to pursue their interests in literature as a whole relating to the centuries between Beowulf writings and the Paradise Lost publication. They are also encouraged to dig deeper into the intellectual, historical and social contexts the Renaissance and middle age literature.
Modern Literature and Culture:
Offered by almost every college of English language, this program was designed to cater for the needs of students interested in the interdisciplinary approach to the modern times/present day culture and literature. There are two major areas covered here: the modern (ranging from the year 1789 to 1945) and the Contemporary (starting 1945 to date). Literature in the modern times stretches to other academic fields such as psychology, history, religious studies, politics, and fine arts. This program is important in the sense that it contributes significantly to the active and collective intellectual well being of the society through seminars and literature courses. The program also takes duration of two years in a majority of the colleges but there are variations too.
The distinguished majors program:
As the name goes, this program is aimed at giving students a chance to explore particular areas of study in this language. A lot more concentration is required here. It involves advanced and academic (sometimes professional) research and writing in literature with the guidance of a qualified member of the English department. 40-50 page scholarly essays are normally the products of such writings. Many students may shy away from writing theses as it requires a lot of time, passion and commitment! However, a student willing to define their career by working closely with their supervisor is encouraged to take this course. It is worth all your efforts.
According to my research College of Education of Westcliff University has started TESOL Certifications programs. By qualifying TESOL Certification, you can teach English abroad.
