Have you been diagnosed with having cataracts? If so, now is the time to do your research and ask questions to make sure you get the right surgeon and the right lens implants. One of the most important decisions you’ll make is which IOL is right for you. An IOL is the Intraocular Lens that will replace your eyes natural lens that has been clouded by the cataract. IOLs have come a long way from the traditional monofocal lenses, allowing you to choose from a variety of options.
The standard monofocal lens is the one your insurance provider covers. It is referred to as ‘mono’ because it provides clear vision at only one distance: near, intermediate, or far. If you choose IOLs for near vision, you would still need to wear glasses or contact lenses to help you see long distances. Premium and multifocal lenses aren’t covered by your insurance because they are considered a luxury, so if you want to pay a little more out of your pocket, then multifocal or premium IOLs are the way to go.
Some of the premium lenses available are Presbyopia-correcting IOLs. These are multifocal and accommodating IOLs. Multifocal IOLs provide clarity at far, intermidiate and near distance ranges and can potentially restore full range of vision without the aid of eyeglasses or contact lenses. Accomodating IOLs like the Crystalens or Trulign Toric actually shift position with the action of your eye movement. Aspheric IOLs, Blue Light-Filtering IOLs, and Light Adjustable lenses are other examples of IOLs to ask your doctor about.
When speaking with your doctor, ask about the different lenses that are available and which lenses are right for your eye care needs. Since some of these lenses are newer than others, some eye care institutions do not offer the lens you might want. Also, know up front how much you will need to pay out of pocket when choosing a lens that isn’t covered by your insurance policy.
