There are a lot of different issues that can manifest in the sinuses. Many people will find one of the nuisances that can form are known as polyps. Nasal polyps can cause a lot of stress, as many panic when they come through. They are non-cancerous, first of all, but they cause issues in the nose which can be as simple as a post nasal drip or as complex as a loss of smell. The main issue here is a growth sac that can occur in both nostrils, and swell a bit causing sinusitis. There are a few treatments that can be utilized, but the big thing to consider is the main symptoms, the causes, and how to take care of this overall.
Understanding The Symptoms
In order to fully understand what nasal polyps are, it’s imperative to know the signs and the symptoms that could manifest. The first thing to denote is that these are isolated in the nostrils. They are located in the upper areas, and cause a great deal of signs including cold like symptoms. Common issues include loss of smell, headache, sinusitis, and in some cases could close up breathing passages. They can recur if left untreated, and in some instances, will require surgical elements to help avoid damage to the tissue in the orbit region.
Root Causes
There is no "one" cause that has been listed for this disease. However, there are some indicators of where the causes may come from. The biggest of these include cystic fibrosis. Asthma, allergic reactions, cystic fibrosis, young’s syndrome, chronic rhinosinusitis is also a root cause. These are things that can cause a great deal of disturbance to the nostril tissues, and are indicative of a larger problem overall. A doctor can diagnose just what is the main issue involved with the polyps and the sinuses.
There are two major types of polyp and they are differentiated by diagnostics. A doctor will look to see where the location is, and whether or not it’s found within an adult or a child. The polyps can also be part of connective tissue, as well as glands, and inflammation may be present. These are all factors that a doctor has to consider before administering treatment. Without knowing exactly what is going on, treatment cannot begin.
The Treatment Options
The main treatment for nasal polyps is a prescription for steroids. These are administered topically, and help with reducing the size of the tissue. Another option can be a sinus rinse that uses salts which can help clear the passages over time.
For those that have a chronic issue, and there seems to be no reduction of the issues, surgery will be required. Surgery is done through endoscopic elements. Depending on the severity of the issue, a person will only have to deal with a minor surgery that lasts less than an hour, and a recovery time of about 2 weeks’ total. After the fact, there should be no major return of the problem. A doctor may recommend using an allergy spray for the future, but often this will erase the problem overall.
