Every year, nearly 5% - 8% of Americans avoid the dentist from the fear of a necessary dental procedure. Several of these procedures though, are relatively pain-free and required for the overall appearance and health of one’s mouth. One of these procedures is known as a dental implant procedure. This procedure is a common cosmetic procedure that is used for a missing tooth or teeth; replacement of broken or chipped tooth; and decaying teeth. And even though there are two separate types of dental implants, the procedure to have them placed is relatively the same.
What is the procedure for dental implants?
The first step, as with any other dental procedure, is coming up with an individualized treatment plan. Often times, a dentist or specialist will have a series of tests and images taken to create a plan that will work best with for the patient. This plan will address specific needs and will be prepared by a team of professionals who are trained in oral surgery procedures.
Next, a root implant (a small post made of titanium) is placed into the bone socket of the missing tooth or teeth. The step requires the jawbone to heal completely around the metal post to create a secure environment for the artificial tooth to reside. This process may take anywhere from six to 12 weeks to heal.
Once the jaw bone has completely healed and has successfully anchored itself around the metal post, an abutment (small connector post) is attached to the existing post where it will hold the new tooth in place.
The process to make a new tooth is a relatively simple one. A dentist or oral surgeon will make impressions of the existing teeth and create a model of the patient’s bite. The new tooth and/or teeth are based off of this model. After the artificial tooth has been made, the dentist will place the crown onto the abutment.
A fun fact to keep in mind is that the dentist or oral surgeon will also match the color of the new teeth to the natural tooth color found in the patient’s mouth. And because the dental implant is secured within the jawbone, the replacement tooth will have the same look, feel and function as any other tooth.
How do I care for my dental implant?
Overall, the success of a dental implant greatly depends on how well it is taken care of. Helpful practices of brushing twice a day and flossing daily can help keep teeth, gum tissues and the dental implant clean.
