Danielle’s Weight Loss Journey

Dannielle successfully lost 55 pounds in just 5 months when she embarked on the keto diet. She went on to lose another 25 pounds to reach her goal weight and two years later she has maintained that weight. In 2021 Dannielle’s weight exceeded 250 pounds, she was shocked and utterly devasted when she weighed herself in the New Year. Initially the keto diet was recommended to Danielle by a friend from an online diet club who had achieved amazing results. Alongside the plan, Dannielle started gentle exercises, first just by walking short distances. She eventually joined a gym and goes five days a week, still walking on the weekends. Dannielle is keen to share her weight loss journey and the key to her success to encourage others towards a healthier lifestyle.

Me: Danielle, can you tell us about your weight loss journey?

Danielle: Sure, in January of 2021 I was over 250 pounds, and I knew I needed to do something about it. I was miserable, I had tried different diets in the past, but nothing seemed to work. I would start off with good intentions, lose 10 or 15 pounds but I always caved and went back to my old ways. I was desperate and considering surgery but then a fellow dieter from an online group I was part of during lockdown recommended the keto diet to me and I decided to give it just one last try.

Me: And what happened when you started following the keto diet?

Dannielle: I lost 25 pounds in the first two months. It was a big shock to me but at the same time it really motivated me to keep going. I lost a further 30 pounds within six months of following the plan. I felt better than I had in years, I had more confidence, I felt great.

Me: Can you tell us about the exercise aspect of your weight loss journey?

Dannielle: I started out by just walking short distances as exercise was a real struggle for me. Slowly my fitness level improved, I was enjoying walking for the first time in years. Eventually I felt confident enough to join a gym. I go four or five days a week and still walk on the weekends. I’ve never had any confidence in my physical abilities before, but now I feel stronger than I ever thought I could be. I surprise myself when I say this out loud, but I can jog now, do squats, push-ups and I’ve even mastered a plank. These small victories have been really empowering for me.

Me: How has your weight loss journey changed your life?

Dannielle: It's changed my life in so many ways. I feel healthier, I have more energy, I’ve gained a confidence I never knew I had. I'm just overall a happy person now. I have gone on to lose another 25 pounds. Two years ago, I was a size 20 and now I slip easily into a size 12. I could not be happier. And the best part is that I did it on my own, without surgery (although encouragement and support from family, friends really helped). I'm so proud of what I've accomplished.

Me: So, Danielle, can you tell us more about the specific keto diet you followed and what made it different from other diets you had tried in the past?

Dannielle: The keto diet is all about high-fat, moderate protein and low-carbohydrates. I gave up all processed foods and sugar which was difficult at first. But once I started seeing results it became easier to stick to it. The diet also allowed me to eat foods like bacon, cheese and avocado which I never thought I'd be able to eat while dieting. I have a sweet tooth, but I was still able to enjoy desserts on the Keto diet, so I wasn’t experiencing sugar cravings which was my usual problem with other diets. I think what made this diet different from others was that it was sustainable for me. I didn't feel like I was constantly depriving myself of certain foods or that I couldn't have a cheat day.

Me: How has your relationship with food changed since losing weight?

Dannielle: Food was a source of comfort for the old me. I would turn to it when I was feeling stressed or emotional. Now, I have a completely different perspective on food and have learnt to make better choices. I see it as fuel for my body. I take the time to plan my meals and make sure I'm getting the nutrients I need. And when I do have something indulgent, it's a conscious choice, not an emotional one.

Me: What advice would you give to someone who is looking to try the keto diet?

Dannielle: I would say, first and foremost, think of it as a lifestyle change rather than a diet and you won’t want to give up. I always thought of losing weight as a battle and food always won. I love my new lifestyle, to get here I went on a journey which wasn’t always easy, but I found keto, and I stuck to my meal plan, and it worked for me. I would say to anyone, never give up, find a plan that works for you and your lifestyle. And don't be afraid to ask for support, whether it's from a friend, a family member or a professional. Try to start including exercise in your daily routine. It's not only important for weight loss but also for overall health. And lastly, be kind to yourself, be patient and don't compare yourself to others. Every journey is different.

With this easy-to-follow diet plan, you'll be on your way to your ideal weight in no time!
