Honey. Nature's gift for those who are tired of using chemicals to remedy illness and minor injuries. Natural remedies are becoming more sought after in this post-covid era. From apartment balcony container gardens in the city, to basement gardens that will survive northern winters, more and more people are exploring natural remedies for everyday ailments and injuries.
One of the best things about organic honey is its shelf life. As long as it is stored in relatively low humidity (65% or less), and doesn't get too hot (95° or below) honey has a shelf life of about one year.
Beloved Home Remedy
Honey can be used topically as an antibacterial for minor cuts and scrapes, and also internally for its antioxidant properties, which are thought to assist in preventing disease and aging. Certain enzymes in honey also aid in moving digestion along.
Because honey is a good source of antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, is also used to soothe sore throats and fight viruses. It has also been shown to be a very effective cough medicine.
Honey is also effective in lowering cholesterol due to its ability to assist the body in processing bad cholesterol into good.
Do you have problems sleeping at night? A couple of tablespoons of honey before bed combined with some warm milk releases the proper enzymes to help you fall asleep and stay asleep. It can also assist in reducing anxiety. You can skip sleeping pills.
Throughout the Ages
Honey has a very long and interesting history. Honeybees have been around for thousands of years. It is commonly known that honey has been found in the tombs of Egyptian royalty, and due to its antibacterial properties, it was used in embalming. Honey was considered to be so valuable, in many countries it was used as currency. Ancient Greek doctors use it as a topical for cleaning ulcers, burns, and wounds.
Honey has been used throughout the centuries. So, the next time you head to the store to pick up cough medicine or antibacterial ointment, skip the medicine aisle and make your way over to the honey. You will not only be leaving the chemicals behind and improving your health, but you will be saving money due to honey's long shelf life. In the long run that's always a good thing.
