If you're planning to own your very own restaurant then you are in for a very exciting ride. Owning a restaurant can be both rewarding and frustrating but it is always exciting. However, in order to ensure that you have the best chance to succeed, you need to make sure you do a few things.
Before opening a restaurant you want to make sure that you have everything you need to be successful. The two major things you need to be successful are a good mentor and a solid plan.
You may think you don't need a mentor but unless you've already opened and run a restaurant for five or six years, you do indeed need a mentor. A mentor should be someone who has opened and run one or more successful restaurants. A good mentor should be easy to talk to and be willing to help you every step along the way. All major decisions (and most minor ones too) should be run past your mentor.
You also need a plan with everything that you'll need for opening a restaurant clearly laid out. Your plan should include financing goals, sourcing requirements, operational guidelines, hiring goals, margin levels, a clear-cut budget, and innovative approaches to make more money. All these things should be carefully worked out and then implemented as you move forward.
You want and need to be as specific as possible with your plan. For example, if you have a meal that is popular, you'd better make sure that the ingredients from the meal have more than one way to get to your restaurant. You want to have a main supplier and then at least one back-up supplier. That way if something happens with your first supplier, you can just get the necessary ingredients from the second supplier. Then you won't have to miss out on the money and you won't anger any customers by taking the popular food off the menu for a day or longer.
Speaking of food, food waste will cost you a lot of money if you don't handle the food properly. Make sure you have a method set-up that will use the oldest foods first - first in, first out. You also want to make sure you have a way of storing the food properly and that you don't buy so much food that you're unable to use most of it before it becomes waste and costs you money.
If you're opening a restaurant then you have an exciting road ahead of you. It will be a road filled with good times and bad times. To help yourself have many more good times than bad times, you need to plan for opening your restaurant and then running your restaurant after that. This plan needs to be thorough and very specific. Also, before opening a restaurant you need to find a good mentor who will help you each step along the way. With a good plan and a good mentor, you will have a much better chance to be successful with the opening and running of your restaurant.
