Overweight? Go on a mental diet

Overweight people usually have tried every diet that is in a book. They put their bodies through a difficult time and although they might lose the weight at first, they always end up piling the kilo's back on.
Diets do not work because most of the time it is something that is temporarily. People go on a diet, lose the weight and go back to their old eating habits. Most of the time they have been starving their bodies, who in return slow down their metabolism, and when they go back to their old eating habits, the weight comes back with a vengeance.
Fortunately there are people who make a change in their lives and stick to it. Now what separates the people who are successful with the people who seem to fail every time? It sounds very simple, but the people who have been successful in losing weight believe that they could lose the weight and keep it off.
The problem with people, who have overweight, is the fact that they do not love themselves enough. They think that they are not worth it. They think that losing weight is difficult or that they simply can not do it. Do you notice a pattern here? They are all negative thoughts.
There is always a need to overeat. It is the same with alcohol or drug abuse. People need it to forget about certain things or to feel better. A lot of people find comfort in food. But the problem is that this is only temporarily. As soon as we have absorbed it all, we feel guilty about it. And not to mention that it did not solve the problem.
In my opinion the only diet anyone ever should go on to is a permanent mental diet. The need to overeat usually comes from the fact that we have had a rotten day, that we are angry at ourselves, that we feel guilty about one thing or another, that we feel we are not worth it, that we feel that other people are better than us, etc. There can be many reasons why we feel the need to overeat, but fact is they are usually negative.
Have you ever stopped and really listened to yourself. Fact is that we have about 50.000 thoughts a day. That is a lot of thoughts! How many of them are negative? How many times a day do you tell yourself that you can not do it, how stupid you are, how ugly you are, how fat you are, etc. No wonder that you can not lose weight!
Thoughts are like seeds. If you plant a seed and nurture it, it will grow into a plant. If you plant a thought; I am fat, and nurture it; I can never stick to a diet, I will never lose the weight, I am just fat and ugly, etc. it will grow into a plant; an overweight person.
So we need to go on a permanent mental diet. We have to start listening to ourselves. Filter our thoughts and change it. The first thing we need to do is love ourselves unconditionally. This is a very difficult thing to do for many people. I hear you thinking: I will love myself when I lose so many kilos. You are basically saying that you are not worth it to be loved.
Listen to yourself and write down all the negative thoughts you have about yourself. Now after you wrote all of these negative statements down, turn them into positive statements.
For example:
I am fat - I have a healthy weight
I can not lose weight - I lose weight in an easy, relaxed and healthy way
I am not good enough - I am a wonderful person and deserve nothing but good.
Whenever you hear yourself talk in a negative way, stop the thought and replace it with a positive one. Repeat these positive statements (also called affirmations) over and over. A good exercise is to stand in front of the mirror and tell yourself that you love yourself and accept yourself the way you are. You might feel a lot of resistance at first, but don not give up. Forgive yourself if you fall back into negatives thoughts. We have told ourselves so many times how bad, fat, ugly we were that it takes time to change it permanently.
From now on only plant good seeds; I love and accept myself the way I am, I have a healthy, fit and slim body, I deserve all the good in the world, etc. Nurture it; I lose weight in an easy, relaxed and healthy way, I lose more and more weight every day, etc. And your plant will grow into the body you want. This will not happen overnight, just like your body did not get overweight overnight. So be persistent, do not give up.
You will notice that after a while you will start to feel better about yourself. You will also notice that you start to lose weight more easily. When you feel better about yourself your need to overeat will disappear. Do not feel guilty when you fall back into a bad habit, forgive yourself. You are worth it, you are a wonderful person, you do deserve to feel good, to look good and to get whatever you heart desires.
