If you’re undecided about whether going to university is right for you, then perhaps you need to know more about university, and what it can offer you.
Here are 10 reasons that you should be considering going to university.
-
A university degree will ensure that you have a better qualification than a lot of other people. This can prove to be very beneficial when you look for a job after you’ve graduated. Graduates also tend to get a better job and earn more than those without a degree. Some jobs require a degree. If you want to become a solicitor, nurse, vet or architect for example, you will need to complete a degree.
-
There are many universities to choose from. Some specialise in certain courses, or subject areas, and others are chosen purely for social reasons. You may want to stay in your hometown, or go to the other end of the country.
-
Graduates have additional skills and experiences which can be used in all aspects of life. From better verbal and written communication skills, to improved time management and personal organisation, the skills you learn at University can be used outside of the workplace.
-
The time spent at university is good for character building. Students have to become responsible, independent and learn to budget. You will need to get yourself to lectures on time, manage to cook and shop for yourself as well as live in a house full of other students!
-
University is a great opportunity to meet people from all over the world, and from different backgrounds. Who knows where your classmates and new best friends will be from?
-
There are plenty of opportunities to try different sports and other activities. From chess to skydiving, your university social life doesn’t just have to mean going to the pub!
-
Being a student gives you the chance to live away from home. You may live in halls of residents with many other students for the first year. This is a great time to spend getting to know other people who may be doing different courses. Alternatively, you may be renting a house with a few friends. You are responsible for paying the rent and the other bills, and ensuring that the place is kept clean and tidy.
-
Studying for a degree can give you time to decide what you want to do, and what sort of job you want, based on the subjects you like. Not everybody decides what career they want at an early age. A degree in a general subject area you like can help you to decide what you’d like to do for a living. You might enjoy sports, but not be good enough to be a professional sportsperson, so you may choose to study a sports science degree.
-
Graduates are in demand. Government estimates say that by 2010, 50% of all jobs will require a degree level qualification. Can you afford not to have a degree?
-
The best 3-4 years of your life? Graduates often say that their time at university is the best time of their lives. From the life-changing leaving home for the first time, to the responsibility of managing budgets and studying hard, as well as the social aspects, it’s no wonder university days are remembered so fondly.
Whether you want to go to university to get a better job, to meet people or just for the social life, you’ll have a great time. What are you waiting for? Why not find the course you want to do at the university you want to study at, in the place you want to be today?
