If your snoring is out of control and keeping your bed partner or maybe even you awake at night then you have to do something about it. Many will use decongestants if their snoring is caused by nasal congestion. By doing this the result is reduced episodes of snoring. It does this by narrowing the blood vessels which reduce the blood supply to the nasal mucous membranes.

Some men will choose oral decongestants but they can have adverse side effects such as high blood pressure and nervousness. Nasal decongestant sprays narrow the blood vessels in the nose. Nasal decongestants can only be used for a few days because using them for prolonged periods can lead to what is called rebound congestion or the medical term which is rhinitis medicamentosa.

When this occurs it will likely result in a dependence on the medication. If you can reduce the amount of nasal congestion, you may be able to reduce your snoring.

Instead of using a decongestant medicine to relieve a stuffy nose, many men will use a saltwater solution. This will remove mucous from the nose, reduce nasal stuffiness, and reduce postnasal drip. You can simply make this solution at home by mixing one half a teaspoon of salt, a half a teaspoon of baking soda to one cup of water at room temperature. You can also purchase a premixed saline solution at your local drugstore.

Aim the water toward the back, not the top, of your head and gently squirt the solution into your nose. The water will run through the nasal passages and into the back of your throat. Spit it out through your mouth. You can use a rubber ear syringe, a medical syringe minus the needle to squirt the solution into your nose. In a pinch you can pour some of the solution into your hand and sniff it up through your nose but this method doesn't seem to work quite as well.

Men can often start snoring just because of a change in the weather or sometimes due to diet. When this is the case the nasal sprays may prove to be very beneficial. If that doesn't seem to work and the wife is still complaining then it might be best to visit your doctor and see what advice he may have for you in regards to your snoring. Usually, there is some kind of solution not too far away.
