Hay fever is a pattern of allergies that exist in the late spring to early fall. It is known by a combination of names including seasonal allergic rhinitis, nasal allergies and pollen or grass allergies. While hay fever is considered to be a seasonal allergy in some parts of the country the pollens that cause the allergy exist all year. Therefore, in those parts of the country hay fever is a year-round allergic irritant.
The main symptoms of hay fever include (but are not limited to) a cough, headache and itchy skin. The skin may be especially itchy around the eyes, nose, throat and ears. Symptoms also include red watery eyes, a stuffy nose, impaired smell, sore throat and fatigue. It can also cause wheezing and problems sleeping.
There is no cure. Treatment focuses on alleviating hay fever symptoms. An allergist can help you determine exactly which grasses or pollens are causing your hay fever symptoms and can develop a treatment plan to minimize them.
Treatment may include a combination of allergy pills or shots as well as nasal sprays. Occasionally, oral steroids are used to break up an especially acute reaction.
Maintaining healthy habits otherwise will help. Here are some tips and hints to help you control your hay fever.
Exercise regularly.
Exercise boosts your immune system and can help alleviate stress. As little as 30 minutes a day three times a week can bring you noticeable improvement.
Keep your doctor visits. Follow your treatment plan.
Your hay fever can get out of control and you can become sick if you do not follow your treatment plan. Always follow up with your doctor or healthcare professional any time you have questions about hay Fever or other aspects of your health.
Take your medicines as prescribed.
Hay fever sufferers are sometimes prescribed a complicated mix of oral medications and shots. Fight the temptation to stop taking your medicine when you start to feel better. This can cause a rebound effect and your hay Fever symptoms can actually get worse.
Smoking
If you smoke, don’t. Smoking can interfere with the ability of your body to fight the symptoms of hay fever. Talk with your doctor about medications that may help you stop smoking.
Be informed
Learn all you can about hay fever. Search the internet and talk to others who have it. Your doctor may have printed information or brochures. Be sure to ask for this information.
By following the advice of your doctor or pharmacist you will soon be able to beat your hay fever symptoms.
