As many sinus patients have been suffering a lot of pain, there are also sinus surgeries that have been developed to bring instant relief to patients. Sinus surgeries are more for severe cases, those that have grown immune to other medicines already. It is for those suffering recurrent sinuses that do not respond to medicine anymore. In other words, sinus surgery is not recommended as a first option.
In sinus surgery, the sinuses are drained out from the opening. There are varied procedures depending on the patient’s clinical history. To briefly illustrate the process, the sinus tissue is removed in exact and precise methods. The surgeon creates a path for these infections to be drained out from the cavities.
There is what is called an endoscopic technique. This new technology lets a doctor see through the insides of a nose so that he may operate without having to cut open the nose. Thus, there is no need to stitch back a cut, and no bruising will result.
However, endoscopic procedure will result to swelling, bleeding and other discomfiting feelings. But most patients still prefer this method for faster recuperation.
This procedure is a revolutionary method. It focuses on resolving the underlying cause of the problem. During surgery, the damages tissues are removed that causes swelling in the mucosa. There is only minor normal discomfort after the procedure. There are no external scars or swelling.
The second type of surgery, the image guided surgery, is known to be the most effective. When doing a sinus operation, your main concern is how close the sinus area is to the brain, eyes and major arteries.
Image guided surgery was originally developed for neurosurgery but it was adopted in the endoscopic sinus surgery. This surgery combines CT Scans and real time information of the exact position of the instruments. This is done through three dimensional mapping.
Image guided surgery uses several high technology devices to aid in visualizing the insides of an affected area. There are video cameras that can peer in the internal organs like the nose (in case of sinus surgeries). Such devices are small enough to cause minimal discomfort on the patient while in use.
The third type of surgery, the Caldwell Luc Operation, is an operation named after George Caldwell (an American Physician) and Henry Luc (a French laryngologist). This method is used for clearing the block of infection in your maxillary sinus. This starts from the mouth by incision to the canine fossa, located above your canine tooth. The doctor first cleans the sinus in this spot and creates a new and enlarged opening for draining.
This method basically involves removing the infected tissue. This procedure is more tedious for the patient, requiring a longer time to recover. He may also experience facial swelling.
Since the sinus is near the eyes, ears, nose and throat, it can not be avoided that there are serious complications that will appear to an endoscopic sinus surgery. This complication may include injury to the eye or spinal fluid leakage.
