Since ancient times it is believed that every gemstone has its own energy that may impact to human health and psychic and even change ones destiny. The amber has especially interesting reputation among other gemstones. Unlike most of gemstones amber is not mineral but fossil tree resin, it is believed that ancient trees absorbed the energy of sun and amber has preserved and enhanced this energy trough millions years. If you hold the amber piece in you palm you can feel nothing but warm, when most of the other gemstones are cool. In old times it was believed that amber chases away all the bad spirits and cleans the atmosphere. Ancient magicians used to use the walk sticks decorated with amber as the sacred items. The incense burners with amber were and are very popular in Indian temples. As a sun stone amber has protecting, defending qualities and as a sea stone it protects against water disasters as well. The sailors used to wear amber amulets for this reason. Ancient hunters used to decorate theirs weapons with figurines of animals carved of amber for good fortune. Every household in Baltic states used to have a large amber piece as a protecting amulet.
The Lithuanian name of the amber is "gintaras" the origin is verb "ginti"- protect, defend. Everybody knows that amber has its own electricity, even the word "electricity" was derived from the Greek "electron" which means amber. A piece of amber rubbed on wool or fabric attracts small bits of paper and other materials. This magnetism was noticed by people and brought into esoteric sphere. Astrology says that amber may attract love and attention, because the powers of Venus presents in amber as well as powers of Sun. Every sign of zodiac can wear amber except Taurus because the Taurus has too much energy of earth and the sun energy of amber may block Taurus. The amber is most suitable for Leo. It brings the energy, physical health and sexuality for the Leos. In ancient Indian knowledge about charkas the amber represents Muladhara, the first, fundamental root chakra, and Kundalini the sacred Divine energy. In ancient Rome people used to carry small amber bubbles in theirs hands they used to rub those bubbles to each other in order to enhance physical and sexual power. It was believed that piece of amber put on the chest of slipping wife overnight makes her confess all the sins she committed. Investigating the history of amber I have met some bizarre believes, for example if an ugly unattractive woman will wear the amber piece which have a phallus shape she will be loved and get married very soon. The pregnant women used to wear amber necklace to ensure successful delivery and healthy child. The amber was widely used to cure the mental illnesses it was considered that amber has relaxing and comforting impact to the depressed and desperate person. A small amber bead put under the pillow would chase away the nightmares and bring good dreams. The shamans and occultist thought that fumes of burning amber when inhaled might bring visions of future in dreams.
The amber considered as a best protecting gemstone, an ultimate amulet that brings beauty and long life for its owner. Not every kind of amber has the same magic qualities, as most valuable and powerful is considered the red amber, which was called the "blood of dragon" in ancient China. The amber with insects and other inclusions was valued as well. The white and opaque amber has less magic power but much more useful as a medicine. To benefit from all magic qualities the amber should be worn properly. Not every metal is suitable for amber. The silver for example is cold, Moon representing metal and may neutralize the Sun energy of amber. The red, warm metals such as copper or yellow gold would work better. The amber must be untreated; it may be polished but not treated by temperature or chemicals. The best is unpolished transparent amber preferably found on the seacoast, not mined.
