Going green is the way to go. It is great for the environment and also puts more money in your pocket. Any time you are saving energy, you are paying less money to the electric company. But there are other ways in which you can put more money in your pocket and one of those ways is through tax credits issued by the IRS to those who decide to make their lives greener.

The tax credit is not specific to those investing in energy saving garage doors, but also for home improvements that include vinyl replacement windows and solar powered water heaters. There are many things that can be done to the home in order to make it environmentally friendly and the government will reward you for that.

What are energy saving garage doors?

If you are not sure what energy saving garage doors are, they are simply garage doors that provide the same protection as regular garage doors, but they use a significantly less amount of energy. The job that they do is the same as a garage door that is not energy efficient. It is all in the mechanics of it as to why it uses less power.

And just because it is energy efficient does not mean that you cannot get different types of garage doors. They are available in different designs to fit your home. One design is not really going to be more efficient than another. When you’re energy efficient, you are energy efficient.

The tax credit

You will be able to apply for the Energy Tax Credit for Replacement Windows and Doors when it is time to file your taxes. For instance, if you buy your energy saving garage doors in 2009, you will be able to claim the credit when you file your tax return in 2010.

As for how you do this, you have to have proof that you purchased energy saving garage doors. When you are asked during the filing process whether or not you purchased anything of the sort, you can answer that you have. And because you have, the tax credit will automatically be applied.

Other points to keep in mind are in regards to how you are filing your taxes. If you are having your taxes filed professionally, then you need to make sure you provide this proof to your accountant. If you are filing them on your own, you have to know that what you are looking for is the Green tax credit. Anything you do to improve energy efficiency is considered you going green and it deserves a reward.

However, keep in mind that the amount of the credit is 30 percent on the first 5,000 dollars spent on energy efficient improvements. That is an automatic 1,500 dollars credit for you. But it is important to know that you can only get the 1,500 dollars once within a two year period. What is great, though, is that you can look at this as a way to get a good portion of your money back on your energy saving garage doors.
