The symbolic nature of having the perfect body comes with psychological and sociological ideas including wealth, status, and happiness. Despite loved ones telling us that we’re ‘fine the way we are’, or that it’s the media’s fault for glamorizing size zero models, we still know that we would look better if we lost a couple of pounds, or if we toned up those problem areas.
This isn’t some new fad – it’s been this way for years and years. As you go through time, it’s clear that there has never been one definitive answer as another diet or exercise method replaced the previous one. In the 1950’s and 1960’s, people dipped their spoons into Cabbage Soup or Grapefruits three meals a day! In the seventies, we went Hollywood – eating nothing but fruit. Then Dr. Atkins told us to remove carbohydrates completely out of our diet. The eighties also saw the emergence of the math lover’s diet – the Weight Watcher’s program, and the milkshake based Slim Fast plan. The nineties saw the Nutri-System, the Blood Type Diet and the Susanne Somers dieting methods. Even since the turn of the millennia, even crazier diets have been popping up. The noughties have seen the return of Dr. Atkins type diets, with the Zone Diet. Also diets with attractive names such as the South Beach diet and the Maple Syrup diet.
So hands up who tried one or more or even all of those? Did they work for you? Or is managing your weight still an issue? For most of us, each of these different methods, while varying in effectiveness, has ultimately proved on the whole, unsuccessful.
Recently, Certified Nutritionist, Exercise Specialist and author of "The Diet Solution Program" Isabel De Los Rios explained where each of these plans fell flat.
Myth number one: Eat fewer calories and you will lose weight.
"Low calorie diets completely damage your metabolism and never result in long term weight loss." and "It’s more important where your calories come from, NOT the actual number."
Myth number two: Eat Low-Fat to Lose Fat
"The only way to lose fat is by eating fat." and "If you are not eating the right kind of fat, your fat loss is literally impossible."
Myth number three: Low Carb diets are the fastest way to lose weight
"Low Carb diets never work long term and they make you feel miserable in the process. You suffer from headaches, muscle aches and horrible constipation. Worst of all, as soon as you put anything that even resembles a carb back into your body, you blow up like a balloon."
Myth number four: Supplements and Fat Burners are the only way to lose weight
"You don’t need anything but the right foods and the right plan to achieve your perfect weight. This is the biggest money making scam in the world today: companies selling you worthless supplements and fat burners with false promises.
Without the right nutrition principles and without the right foods, no supplement will have any effect on your body. It will just be a complete waste of money!"
Myth number five: Diet foods will help you lose weight
"Most diets foods actually contain ingredients that are making you GAIN weight." and "The diet food marketing industry continues to lie to you about these products in an effort to make more and more money."
