If you are considering printing postcards online for your business, you may be somewhat confused by the process. Many people realize the potential that postcards have as a marketing tool, but are uncertain regarding where to begin. Each printing company is a bit different, but the overall process remains very similar. Here are some of the things to consider when printing postcards online.

Printing in the Past

Postcard printing services have been in existence for decades, but more and more companies are turning to the internet for their printing needs. Most often, the actual printing is still done on offset printing presses or through digital printing. The main difference is how the design is created and submitted to the printer.

Previously, you would design the postcard yourself and take it to the printer. The printer would then scan the artwork or transfer it to the printing plate. Now nearly everything is done digitally, from online design to the submission process.

Choosing a Design

The cheapest and easiest way to print postcards online is to select a template already designed by the printer. This will save you the hassle and cost of coming up with an appropriate design yourself and having it translated into the format the printer needs. Often, the templates will be customizable with your own headline, photo, and message. You will usually be able to design the front of the postcard, as well as the address side, though an area will be left blank for the recipient’s address.

Proof and Approval

Once you have completed the design process and uploaded your own images and information, the company will generally give you a type of proof to approve. This proof will usually be an image of the final design, allowing you to see what your postcard would look like if printed. You have to approve the proof in order to move forward.

Adding a Mailing List

Some printing companies will give you the option to upload your mailing list so that you can have cards custom printed. If you don’t have a mailing list, some will also partner with data collection services that sell mailing lists. You will need to inform the printer of the list that you wish to use.

Choosing Printing Options

You will often be asked to select from various printing options. This includes features such as the weight of the paper, whether you want it printed in black and white or color, and if you want additional features, such as a glossy coating. The higher end options will cost more, but will often have a better impression on the reader.

Mailing Services

If the printer offers mailing services, you will also be asked to select the postage rate that you want to utilize. Standard mail is often less expensive; however, many companies will pay the extra charge for first class to ensure a quicker delivery.

Review and Finalize

Once you have completed all the design steps of your postcard, you will usually be given one final chance to review your order. Double check all of the information to make sure it is correct, going back to edit if needed. Once you submit your order and your payment, you will not be able to make changes, thus you should make sure you are completely happy before you finalize the process.
