Buick brought us the invention of a turn signal in 1938. At the time it was called the Flash-Way Directional Signal. Since that first automobile decided to install the flashing light bulb for safety it has become an integral part of every vehicle throughout History.

The turn signal has become a necessary commodity in the world of transportation safety. There is the growing need for nonverbal communication on city streets and on busy highways. The turn signal is not just a convenience but it is a communication device, intended to be used for the purpose of informing other drivers on the road that you are going to do something, whether it is change lanes, enter or exit a freeway, or turn a corner. This very practical and simple device is actually a costly and complicated mechanical device.

When driving down the road is there any other way of indicating that you are changing lanes? Sure there is. You can stick your arm out the window and use the bicycle hand signals of pointing in the direction you intend to go, or you could look back in the direction you wish to direct your vehicle. Neither of these two methods is the optimum way to communicate your needs to other drivers. Many drivers are concentrating on the road and not on your head and people drive with their arm hanging out of a window often so it is not clear why the arm would be sticking out.

Incidentally, it is also the law in all 50 states to utilize your turn signal when changing lanes, when entering or exiting traffic, or when turning a corner if your vehicle is so equipped. In those states where vehicle safety inspections are conducted part of the check is to ensure that your directional signals work. If they do not work your vehicle does not pass inspection because it is deemed unsafe to drive.

Safety on the road is not for only the driver of the car. Safety on the road, communication, and cautious driving are safety for the other drivers on the road as well. When people do not drive safely and do not communicate their wants then an accident can occur road rage may be caused and you may get a ticket.

For the rest of you if someone turns on their turn signal be respectful and be polite and let them in.
