Australia is a country known as for its vast amounts of scenic beauty and friendly people. Beyond these initial observations it is clear that there is so much more to Australia than meets the eye, great skiing. This is important because the country has a long and illustrious history of participation in the sport going back many decades. As a result, millions of people from around the globe will travel to the many different ski areas to see for themselves what skiing in Australia is all about.
New South Wales
The history of skiing in Australia goes back many years as the sport was first able to gain popularity in New South Wales. This is where some of highest peaks are located along with the oldest and largest resorts in the country.
Victoria
Victoria has the most ski areas in all of Australia and is home to Mount Bogong which stands 1,986 meters tall. Skiing was first developed in this area during the 1890’s as simple way for miners to be able to move back fourth during the winter. As the sport became more popular the overall amount of ski resorts increased dramatically with the Mount Buller Inter school ski events as the largest single snow event in the world.
Capital Territory
In the Australian Capital Territory cross country skiing is all the rage with many participants finding Mount Gingera as the best way to be able to cross country ski when the conditions are most ideal.
Tasmania
Tasmania has outstanding skiing for those who are seeking added adventure and challenge. With much of the area subject to winter storms that are coming out of Antarctica. In all, there are total of eight mountains that exceed 1,500 meters, the most popular being Mount Wellington which rises above the capital Hobart.
Clearly Australia has a wide variety of ski resorts, with all of them offering the challenges that you will find in other areas with that overall unique feel that makes them truly Australian.
