Amla also know as amalaki, dhatriphala and in Sanskrit and Emblica officinalis scientifically, is the most widely used herb in the ayurvedic system of medicine. The use of Amla fruit (Emblica officinalis, Phyllanthus emblica) has been a fundamental part of India’s practice of Ayurvedic Medicine for centuries, and is one of the planet’s most concentrated sources of natural vitamin C. IN AYURVEDA, importance of Amla has been ascertained from the experiments and experiences of ancient Rishi-Munis of India, namely Charak, Chyavan, Atreya, Kartik, Vrat Koumudi, and many others. Amla is considered one of the strongest rejunevatives (rasayana), particularly for blood, bones, liver, heart and skin.
Amla is a proven antioxidant, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-mutagenic, yeast inhibiting, nematicidal, anabolic, anti-hepatoxic, anti-hyperhidrosis, anti-inflammatory, anti-histaminic, anti-spasmodic, hypolipidemic, and hypotensive relieving properties. The dried fruit is useful in hemorrhage, diarrhea and dysentery. It is antibacterial and its astringent properties prevent infection and help in the healing of ulcers. It is used as a laxative to relieve constipation in piles. It is used in the treatment of leucorrhea and artherosclerosis. Amla is also known as Indian Gooseberry. It has one of the richest concentrations of natural vitamin C of any edible plants on this planet.
Amla has a medium sized tree, which ranges from 20 – 25 foot. It possesses yellow-colored flowers that blossom from February to May. Its fruit is greenish yellow in appearance, which is available from October to April. It generally occurs in the area 4500 ft. above sea level. Plant part used is fruit. Application and consumption of amla has an astonishing effect on hair and skin. Hair that has already gone grey can be reverted back to their original color by drinking any green vegetable juice in which 2-3 amla fruits have been crushed. Else dried amla powder mixed with water can be consumed. Amla juice also helps revive the elasticity of skin. Production is exactly as described in the Ayurvedic texts. Amalaki is dried and crushed into powder, dipped in fresh Amalaki juice, then dried again. This mixture is ground into a powder and again mixed with fresh juice.
Amalaki is helpful in promoting the absorption of food in the body. Due to cold properties of Amalaki, it promotes the proper absorption of water and other nutrients in the intestines. It is also helpful in maintaining the proper peristaltic movements in the body. It is also responsible for strengthening the hair, nails, bones and teeth. It prevents the premature graying of hair and dandruff. The presence of Amla resulted in an enhanced cell survival, decreased free radical production and higher antioxidant levels similar to that of control cells. It finds great application in improving eyesight. It also counters diseases like reddening, itching and watering of eyes. Good results have also been seen in cataracts.
