Organization gets everything done. Whether you’re a newspaper writer or a garbage man, having the right order to your schedule makes everything easier. The same is very much true for moving, when you’ll be going through just about every possession you own and preparing it to be packed and shipped to a new town. Here are some helpful tips to make that process as easy as possible.
•Ask for Referrals – Your realtor or neighbors might be able to offer you a good referral on a moving company. You want a company you can trust with a long list of references and starting with someone you trust is a good idea. Other sources of good referrals include antique stores, interior designers, and home builders.
•Check References and Licenses – A houston moving company will have worked with a lot of people. Additionally, they must have one of two licenses. National operates must have the Interstate Commerce Commission license where as local movers will need whatever state license is required in your state. Check for these and for any other necessary referrals from past customers.
•Narrow Down the Company – Referrals are good, but there are some other things to consider in houston movers. They need to offer on-site visits to give an accurate estimate, and ideally you’ll want to be sure you’re always dealing with movers and not a broker. Additionally, it’s a good idea to find a company with full time, long term employees who have something vested in doing a good job for you.
•Create a Checklist – Make a list of questions for your mover and tell them everything you need and expect in the move. You’ll also want to create a file for all of your moving related paperwork. Keep your estimates, receipts, list of items, and rooms in your new home here. If you have a floor plan for the new home, add it as soon as possible to make planning easier.
•#Photograph and Label Everything – Create an inventory of everything you own and its current condition and then store it somewhere safe to keep in case there is an insurance claim. This can be invaluable when it comes down a case of "I said" versus "he said".
•Clean Everything – While moving, it’s a great idea to clean all of your possessions, especially carpets and rugs. If you need anything reupholstered or restuffed, have it done now as well. Basically, if you’ve been putting off a hefty chore, get it done. It’s as good a time as any.
•Remove the Old Stuff – Get rid of anything that is due to be tossed, including old children’s clothes or toys, broken furniture, garbage in the basement, or plants that cannot be carried with you.
