It is not everyday that you meet people with eating disorders. Binge overeating, bulimia and anorexia are just three most common eating disorders that are prevalent this world of fitness and wellness as a sign of beauty and acceptability. The fear of getting fat triggers someone to adopt a weight loss diet that would help in the reduction of stored fat or maintain a slim body built. People’s intense desire to lose weight usually leads them to having abnormalities towards eating.

It could be possible that the next sufferer for eating disorders could be you or your loved one. It could help to know the signs indicating the beginning of eating disorders in order for you to make necessary interventions so that the problem would no longer get worse.

Healthy diet is what bulimics and anorexics hate the most. Both kinds of people would purge food out of their systems thinking that whatever they have taken in should be spit out or they would become fat. Restrictive eating behaviors are the most common signs of eating disorders. The act of skipping meals or avoiding food is a clear indication of an abnormal attitude towards eating. Reading of food labels all the time, taking in little portions of food and even doing away with their favorites are obvious basis for concluding that the person is already having some diet problems.

Bingeing and purging are two ironic symptoms of eating problems. Some people who are faced with the severe desire to lose weight would eat normal portions during meals but would sneak out to binge especially during midnight in a private area where they could not be disturbed or discovered. You should know that empty wrappers and packages and cleaned out refrigerators are warning signs of bingeing.

On the other hand, purging is way too dangerous for anyone. Heavy weight loss often results from purging the self to get rid of ingested food during meals. Throwing up right after each meal is usually a popular form of purging by people with eating disorders. There are other forms which they could opt for including the use of laxatives and diuretics, exercising vigorously or fasting. Anorexics have this weird reaction over food wherein they take in very small amounts during meal time and they even end up purging themselves because of what they have taken in.

The physical appearance of a person would clearly indicate the eating problems he or she is suffering from. Any significant weight loss, constantly fluctuating weight and rapid weight gain are signs that your loved one is having some eating problems. Altered appearance and distorted body image are also proofs of problems with the person’s diet simply because the absence of healthy diet in the person’s routine cause the body not to function well.

You can help those who are suffering from eating disorders by initially communicating your concern to the person involve. Talk about what you are noticing and the signs that are implicated in his or her actions. Do not be confrontational and avoid accusatory statements. The person would be in denial and no matter how you pinpoint on his or her problem, the thing would not be resolved unless you take time to listen.
