Daintree – and the surrounding area otherwise known as the Daintree Rainforest - is named after the pioneering British geologist in North Queensland – Richard Daintree. It is located about 111 kilometres from Cairns and 56 kms from Port Douglas, although strangely when you take the journey by road in the tropics, time disappears, and it could be only minutes up the road !

This picturesque land can best be described as “Paradise on Earth”. With the McDowell mountain ranges standing tall on one side and the beautiful Daintree river flowing on the other, the beauty of the region cannot be properly explained in words.

The Daintree region is visited by a large number of tourists throughout the year, both domestic and international. A visit through the Daintree rainforests (one of the oldest rainforests in the world) is an unparalleled experience. It is a rich treasure trove offering a wide variety of natural beauty and experiences.

One can see a good sample of the rich flora and fauna of Australia in these rainforests. The Daintree rainforests spread over an area of about 1200 square kilometres. For the nature lovers this is the ideal location to take a walk so close to nature.

The other areas of interest here are the Daintree National Park, the timber museum and cruises down the Daintree river. The timber museum is a good place to see the skilful carpenter’s working magic out of wood and to also receive a glimpse into the past of the timber getters.

It is a great place to pick up some lovely gifts for your near and dear at home, who haven’t been fortunate enough to see the place in person ! The cruises down the Daintree river are a must try experience. Its quite possible you’ll spot a few crocodiles up close, in their natural habitat. Spot the ‘slides’ where the prehistoric beasts enter the water. You’ll also be amazed at the variety of wild life and wonderful birds that one has seen on the cruise. The scenic beauty of the area is sure to sweep you off your feet. Just stay in the boat … this is a paradise to be enjoyed in the hands of an experienced local guide – Australia’s version of the Amazon perhaps!

There are a number of tour operators here who conduct tours that are a ‘must see’ while you are here. They’ll take you on a guided tour showing you around the major attractions that make Tropical North Queensland what it is …. Truly beautiful and awe-inspiring.

In the Daintree region try the tropical natural ice creams made from fruits you will most likely never have heard of.

A short commute from the Daintree is Mossman with its great local cuisine (most likely termed ‘tucker’ in this thriving rural township). A little further South you find Port Douglas and there the array of top class cuisine in very very special places is awe-inspiring – this is the playground for the rich and famous, in tropical ambience, and you will find something to suit even the fussiest food critic !

One can be assured of a relaxed holiday here. Enjoy the spas that soothe your senses with their traditional therapies and revitalise your body and soul. Push your boundaries by indulging in activities ranging from golf, riding to bird watching. Daintree is a popular bird watching destination attracting a number of ardent bird watchers from all over the globe, throughout the year.

Daintree and Cape Tribulation offers a wide range of accommodation to suit specific needs. It is a lovely blend of nature and man’s creations. Contact Executive Retreats, a local boutique operator based in the heart of the region, who will help you find a very special holiday hideaway specifically chosen to suit your needs.
