Invented in 1816 by French physician Rene Laennec, the stethoscope was further refined in 1851 by Arthur Leared and again in 1852 by George Cammann, whose design was adopted for commercial production and has been the standard ever since. Minor refinements have been made over the years, but the basic design of the stethoscope has stayed the same, and has become a symbol of the doctor’s profession.
Acoustic stethoscopes are the most familiar, and operate by transmitting sounds via a small chest piece through two hollow tubes. Until its invention, physicians were limited to external examination of their patients. The stethoscope allowed doctors to listen to the inner workings of the body, which gave them valuable information not seen with the naked eye. Important diagnostic observations are still made today by auscultation, and the stethoscope is widely used by physicians to help diagnose heart, lung, and bowel disorders.
Although simple in construction, a discount stethoscope still requires maintenance and care for optimal performance and safety. Since a stethoscope will be used from patient to patient, cleanliness is a concern. The flexible hoses, made of vinyl or rubber, should be kept away from solvents such as alcohol or soap, as these substances can have a detrimental effect by accelerating the aging process. In addition, the two-sided chest piece of a stethoscope has moving parts and is lubricated in the manufacturing; however, regular lubrication is needed to maintain integrity of the instrument.
Only substances approved for the cleaning of stethoscopes should be used to avoid damage.
Discount stethoscopes are available at a number of online vendors. When choosing a discount stethoscope, the things to be considered include:
• Assess your needs. A single-head model is usually used by cardiologists to monitor heart sounds, and a dual-head, the more popular choice for many medical personnel, is utilized for low frequency lung sounds. Different models are available for pediatric and geriatric patients.
• Many medical professionals also prefer a lighter weight discount stethoscope for comfort.
• Extra earpieces are available for easy replacement, and it is a good idea to keep a few on hand.
• Purchasing more than one discount stethoscope can not only extend the life of both, but one may provide a better sound to the ears than another. Many professionals buy two or more of the same model to ascertain which one works best for them.
• It is worth the investment in a more expensive model. Cheaper models can crack easily or provide a substandard result. Professional needs will dictate which type of stethoscope is best, but investing in a better model will insure a better and longer performance.
The choice of a discount stethoscope is a personal decision, based on the intended function and comfort level. Discount stethoscopes can be personalized by choice of color, and fabric sleeves are also available for a more personal touch.
Although more sophisticated equipment is available today for diagnostic purposes, the stethoscope remains an indispensible aid in diagnostic examinations.
