The Link Between Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Snoring is so frequent these days that you will notice we have now an epidemic of sleep disorders.

People start to be interested in snoring when their husbands or wives let them know that they are snoring. They don't have any idea that they can make such a terrible sound, because snoring happens when they are sleeping.

Maybe your husband or wife told you the same problem, that you have a ridiculous snoring while you sleep. Or perhaps you are his or her soulmate and you are trying to identify a cure for the person who sleeps in your bed.

So, why do people have snoring and how can they stop this disorder?

Before trying to stop snoring, you may want to identify the causes of this annoying disorder. You maybe think that snoring is because of an obstruction of the airway, since you realized that all these problems happen in the airway area, such as nose, neck or mouth.

However, why do you have an obstruction? It must be something that blocks the airway. When you are sleeping, the muscles from your neck that help keep your airways open to breathe, become relaxed and floppy. So, if you're sleeping on your back, these soft and floppy tissues are pulled down by gravity, causing the airways to become smaller and to make that horrible sound called snoring.

Every human has soft tissues in his mouth, like the soft palate, the uvula and adenoids. That means that everybody should snore? Well,I don't think so. Snoring is more frequent in people who have the following risk factors:

• Weight gain - obese persons has an increasing risk to develop snoring.

• Gender - snoring is more frequent in men than in women .

• Smoking is another risk factor for snoring, since it can influence the lung capability to breathe and usually cause breathing issues.

• Medicines for sleeping and alcohol also relaxes the soft tissues when you sleep.

• Allergies, colds and nasal polyps, or a wounded nose can be a factor to block your airways.

• Pregnant women can also have snoring. The major cause is the weigh gain, mainly during the last stages of pregnancy.

If you pay attention to these risk factors it's not difficult to understand how can you treat snoring. Just eliminate the risk factor and you'll have a perfect sleep.

However,some persons can't find a snoring treatment so easily. Not only that they snore, but the sound they make is very powerful and unusual. And they often stop breathing in sleep for ten seconds or more. Soon you will realize that your issue is not a common snoring breathing disorder, but something more than that.

Well, your fear may come true. A person who has irregular and loud snoring and often stops breathingin his sleep, has asleep breathing disorder called sleep apnea. Does it sounds familiar? Sleep apnea is one of the most frequent sleeping disorder, after snoring. It's very threatening because it has some serious issues, such as:

• hypertension

• arrhythmia

• stroke

• weight gain

• diabetes mellitus type 2

• panic attacks

• Depression

• Chronic fatigue syndrome

• excessive daytime sleepiness, accidents at work or when you're driving.

• Sudden death.

Sleep apnea is not always so easy to treat like snoring. It's easier to treat a milder case of obstructive sleep apnea, than a moderate or severe cause.
