Some films have you waiting with baited breath for their release and Toy Story 3 is one such film.
The original Toy Story was a watershed film for Pixar Animation Studios, and in its back-draft we saw a swathe of beautifully rendered animated films from Pixar and others. For me, the thing that singled out Toy Story from all of the others was the script, which managed to do what only The Simpsons had really done before – make a truly funny production for all ages. Kids went mad for the talking toys and fell in love with main character Woody, and adults wept with laughter at the tight script and the delightful mimicking of real life.
Thankfully it looks as though the same principles have been applied to Toy Story 3, with many people saying that it is the funniest of the trilogy. The other wonderful thing about the Toy Story films has been the incredible cast and again there is no disappointment this time ‘round. Tom Hanks reprises his role as Woody, an old fashioned toy based on the central character of an old cartoon called Woody’s Round up, and Tim Allen once again takes the reins of Buzz Lightyear, the intergalactic toy Woody so despised throughout the first film. The only disappointment to the cast list for the third instalment is that there is no place for the fabulous Kelsey Grammer, who played The Prospector in Toy Story 2 with such menace and gravitas. We do, however, have the wonderful addition of Joan Cusack as Jessie the Cowgirl, another toy from Woody’s Round Up. I’ve been a huge fan of Joan Cusack since seeing her fantastic performance in School of Rock, and I can’t wait to see her take on Jessie.
Toy Story 3 is directed by Lee Unkrich, who co directed Toy Story 2, and who also co directed Monsters inc. and Finding Nemo. For those of you who know their Pixar films, I’m sure you’ll agree that this is an incredible pedigree. The Script has been put together by Michael Arndt, who is Oscar nominated for the very funny and slightly off the wall road movie Little Miss Sunshine.
When you think of trilogies, you think of The Godfather, and you think of Jaws, and it is easy to imagine that a third film is likely to just be a cash cow for the makers, a quick buck to make on the back of a couple of great films. There are of course exceptions to this rule, and Toy Story 3 falls into this bracket. I honestly think that the first two films were so good that Pixar wouldn’t be able to bear sullying the title with a bad film!
Toy Story 3 looks like being a great film and right up there with the previous two. It looks like you don’t necessarily have to have seen the previous two films, but my advice if you haven’t, would be to see them, and see them quick, before Toy Story 3 is released!
