Antwerp, a city in Belgium, is the second largest city in the country and one of the most dynamic cities in the world. It has a metropolitan ambience and a sophisticated charm but overall has a seaside resort flair. It is a fashion capital and a diamond center of the world. It is a stylish European city that is jeweled with monuments of a wealthy medieval and Renaissance period. Best known for its patios, the yacht harbor and the river Scheldt the city also boasts of a plethora of museums, a great zoo, large pedestrian-only shopping streets and really great quality beers. It also has a vibrant night life and a great music scene.
Some of the best ways to roam about in the city and relish the lovely sights is via horse-drawn carriages and motorized trams along with boat trips on the river Scheldt, the canals and the harbor itself. The most significant tourist attraction of this city is the underwater tunnel located at the Aquatopia aquarium. The highlights of this aquarium include landscaped coral reefs, large rays, sharks, a tropical rainforest area with reptiles and a submarine experience. Additionally, they have opened up a new playground area indoors in close proximity to the shark tank. The magical experience of having to walk through blue water all around you and fishes swimming above your head is one that you cannot afford to miss.
Then there is the Antwerp zoo which is one of the world’s oldest zoological gardens and is most popular among tourists. The commencement of the zoo dates way back to the year 1843. It is home to 5000 animals and is particularly famous for state of the art sub-Antarctic penguin enclosure and a large elephant compound. The zoo is also home to animals like hippopotamus, tapirs, tamarins and reptiles. We also have a brewery tour in Antwerp which features the Brouwerij de Koninck that was established in the 19th century. It is famous for its brown ale. Tourists are taken around the brewery and shown the procedures involved in the production of this liquid nectar and given an opportunity to sample it by the end of the tour.
Boat trip on the river Scheldt should be an essential part of your tour. They offer luxury boat trips as well as evening boat trips which is a perfect way to look at the city in the night lights and get a rather romantic feel out of it. Also do not forget to check out the Catamaran castle which is actually a large floating boat complex that comprises of restaurants bars and casinos and is often bustling with parties and live music. As for kids, we have the Pirateneiland which is the country’s largest indoor playground housed in a renovated three-floored warehouse. It is created on the lines of a pirates’ lifestyle and consisting of one large ship with slides, ropes, soft play equipment and refreshments are also available.
