Bet Uncut was one of the most popular adult themed TV shows on broadcast cable TV. The show had itself a cult following due to the overtly sexual images of women and the cheap concept of the hip hop artist’s videos. The premise of the show was to show lewd, filthy and vile and cheap themed music videos. The show was broadcast at 2 in the morning because of the content usually associated with the programming. BET Uncut as a show, provided a means for artists to be heard and get their music out to the public.
The BET Uncut television show design was to broadcast cheap looking music videos. With the lack of a budget, many artists made it a duty semi nude women dancing in their videos as their main selling point. This served as a powerful tool for many hip hop artists who were not signed to a major label to get their product out to the masses. Major label artists such as 50 Cent, Ludacris and Nelly used BET Uncut as a cheap and controversial to promote their brand new album by creating videos exclusively for BET Uncut.
BET Uncut had its share of famous moments and stars. Little known rappers such as Joker the Bailbondsman, Mighty Casey and Precha are just a few of the rappers who gained notoriety from the BET Uncut show. These memorable figures became show favorites based on their video or the content of the song. The cheesier the video, the more people wanted to see it. Many times the quality of the songs and accompanying video were so bad that it was more comedic than anything of true quality.
BET Uncut also had its share of controversy. Countless institutions felt that BET Uncut degraded women and showed them in situations that encouraged the disrespect of women. The controversy surrounding the show reached its peak in late 2003, when hip hop star Nelly released according to many, the worst BET Uncut video ever called, Tip Drill. The Tip Drill video was created with the intention for it to be aired on Uncut. The video achieved this and far expected the intention it was originally created for
BET Uncut was cancelled in 2006, ending what many claimed to be BET’s most popular and controversial show. Many people believed that executives at Viacom felt the pressure that was being applied by the different groups that called for the end of such a terrible show in their eyes. Even though BET Uncut was cancelled, the show continues to live on in cyberspace. People can watch the famous videos on sites such as Youtube.
