Most of us have a vague idea about massage, but how do we find the right therapist? It is best to do a little research before heading straight for the nearest massage therapist. Firstly, why do you want a massage? Is it because you have an injury or because you feel stressed? Maybe you just want to enhance your sense of well being. There are many different kinds of massage and holistic treatments and you need the one to suit you.

If you have an injury you may want to try a deep tissue massage. This type of massage focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is particularly good for people who have stiff necks, lower back tightness and sore shoulders. The cause of the pain is bands of rigid tissue in the muscles, tendons and ligaments that block circulation and cause pain, limit movement and inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by breaking down these rigid bands and restoring the natural movement in your muscles. This is quite an intense therapy and can be a little uncomfortable, but always let the therapist know if you are experiencing any pain. It is also particularly good for people who suffer from osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, RSI or muscle tension or spasms.

Swedish massage is probably the most common therapy. It is ideal for people who have not had a massage before or those who have no specific reason for their massage. Swedish massage uses gentle pressure to promote relaxation. If there are any problem areas, like knots in your shoulders, the therapist will apply a little more pressure. Swedish massage is the basis of most types of massage.

When you go for your massage, arrive a few minutes early so that you have time to fill in the necessary forms and time to disrobe and relax. Your therapist will be very discreet, covering you with a sheet or towel and only revealing the area being worked on. If you feel happier to keep your underwear on just let the therapist know. It is best you are at your own comfort level to appreciate your massage fully. After your massage, drink plenty of water to help your body expel the toxins which are released during the massage.
