Ringworm rash gets its name from the round rash that develops on the skin. In reality is has nothing to do with a worm. Ringworm is a fungal infection of skin. It can affect the whole body, and is known as tinea corporis. Jock itch is a popular form of this problem and many are familiar with athlete's foot. With athlete's foot, the feet get patchy and itchy. Small cracks can appear on the feet especially in between the toes.
Ringworm rash typically occurs in moist area. A typical characteristic of fungi is that it survived by eating plants and other animal material. This type of fungi survives on keratin, which is the material found on outer layer of skin, hair, or nails therefore making these areas more susceptible to attack. These areas also provide a perfect moist and dry atmosphere for the fungi to grow.
This type of skin problem is contagious and can spread with human and animal contact. It can also be contracted from the flakes of the dry skin , sharing clothing or through the sweat contact. People who suffer from eczema or any other skin disorder are more likely to get it because their skin structure is already weakened.
The characteristic symptom of this rash is the dry, raised round patch with is slightly red (hence the name ringworm). The round ring is generally flaky and bumpy. Sometimes blisters may be present. Usually as the rash grows the skin inside the circle become clear but it is not the case in many children. Not everyone will get a ring which is why it may be hard to diagnose.
Proper diagnosis should be obtained by taking a history and physical examination. One important fact to remember in diagnosis is that this type of fungi does not glow under ultraviolet lights.
Miconazole or clotrimazole are two commonly available anti fungal creams used. Many of these creams are available without prescriptions which include Lotrimin, Canestan, Mycelex, and Tinactin. These creams are usually given for two weeks. If the problem persists beyond two weeks, it is advisable to visit a doctor who can prescribe a stronger prescription drug to cure the affected area such as Sporanox or Diflucan. When the fungus is found in nails or scalp, it is more difficult to treat. If the prescriptions lotions and cream do not work then oral medicines may be prescribed to contain the infection. It is very important to follow instructions while taking the medicine. If you think that, you have contracted this through your pet then it is advisable to visit a veterinarian and get appropriate treatment for your pet.
Remember prevention is better than cure. Therefore, in order to prevent the ringworm rash or to avoid a new recurrence it is advisable to keep you skin clean and dry. Avoid sharing clothing, locker room towel fights and foot contact with an infected person. Wear cotton clothes and make sure that you wear sandals to public shower and locker rooms You can also apply talcum power on susceptible areas to keep the moisture away. Oregano oil is a natural product with anti-fungal properties for those who prefer using something from the health food store. There are also sprays available for the home.
