Conserving energy is one of the many ways to reduce our carbon footprint and ‘go green’, and is encouraged in all walks of life – at homes, communities and work places. The main concept of energy conservation stemmed from concerns to preserve resources for the future and reduce environmental pollution. It is also synonymous with reducing energy costs, increasing efficiency and maximising profits – something that industrial and commercial users are keen on doing. Whichever reason, energy conservation is a must for all work places now.
There are several ways to conserve energy at work.
The first thing that comes to mind is lighting, which is the largest user of electricity in commercial buildings. In addition to ensuring lights are switched off when not necessary, many businesses can lower their light bills by installing energy efficient equipment such as fluorescent and compact fluorescent lamps, task lighting, lighting controls and reflectors. Using this equipment reduces eyestrain and headaches among employees, improving work productivity as well as reducing costs.
By carefully evaluating the way a building is used, opportunities for efficiency improvements can be found. If there is a space in the building that is not used by people, then this area will not require air conditioning, and should be isolated. Also one of the easiest and quickest techniques to save energy is to eliminate leaks in the building exterior (in walls, windows, doors, ceilings and floors). Openings should be checked, and any broken or cracked glass replaced, to prevent cool air from leaving the building. Also steps should be taken to ensure the space around air conditioners is thoroughly sealed.
Another means to reduce energy consumption is by running equipment and machinery more efficiently. In this day and age, almost every office relies on some form of equipment including computers, monitors, printers, facsimile machines and copiers. A huge percentage of personal computers and printers are left running over night and weekends, which wastes a lot of energy. By taking the effort to switch off all machinery and equipment when not in use, mammoth savings can be made. Also, purchasing energy efficient equipment, which does not produce as much heat, is another means of saving energy.
These are just a fraction of ways to conserve energy at a work place. There are many consultancy firms available that provide the best energy conserving solutions to suit companies specifically.
